The problem with inviting audience participation is that it relies on the audience having a collective understanding and acceptance of the boundaries involved, and once they're crossed it's very difficult (though not impossible) to establish them again. That 1969 Last Night recording is every bit as joyous and fun-packed as was last night's but it's also far more disciplined and respectful.

All done in great spirit but who were the dozy beggars wearing badly made blue and yellow berets? Is it a club or a sect or a whole religion now?

What did those in the Hall hear during the Round Britain WWI song medley?

Er, we heard what was performed in the Hall. And sang along, as the programme directed us, to the choruses of the last three numbers. What would you have had us do?

Your question seems to belie your psuudonym.

TV viewers didn't stay with the hall but joined the Proms in the Park locations for the WW1 medley. Daft decision if you ask me.

But for those of us who were not in the hall, and were watching on TV, it would be interesting to know the answer to Prommer's question.

                    Is the answer 42?

Well my #42 is not the answer but certainly relevant!

When the broadcast returned to the hall, Gerald Finley was leaving the stage. Did he participate in the singalong?

Oh, OK. Looking at the printed programme:

"Roses of Picardy" - GF sang the verses and the choirs joined in the refrains
"It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary" - BBC Singers sang the verses (some "men only" or "women only") and the audience joined in the refrains
"The End of the Road" - GF sang the verses, choirs and audience joined in the refrains
"Keep the Home Fires Burning" - Choirs (women's voices) sang the verses and GF, all choirs and audience joined in the refrains

Some, but not all, numbers had parts for Jess Gillam to play.

It was, of course, a world premiere of this arrangement. I'd like to have a recording (and I can't say that about all the world premieres I've heard this season), but it doesn't seem likely, and it doesn't seem likely it will be programmed again at a Last Night any time soon.

Why was this omitted from the TV broadcast? What did R3 broadcast? Was there an announcement that I missed?

Sounds better than what was on offer from around the realm! Just checked with radio iplayer and the hall delivery is there!

Thanks for that, PhilipT. A sad decision to show the parks rather than that.
