Definitely one for the 'Now That's What I Call String Playing' compilation. After that quite superb Brahms 1 perhaps more orchestras should loosen up with some Hungarian / Gypsy improv. The only thing that would have made it complete would have been Roby Lakatos - the greatest of them all - who I see played a gig at Ronnie Scott's at the weekend.

The first half was absolutely superb as far as string playing was concerned. Very short but not enough musicality, imo. The Brahms 1,in the second half, was very good indeed.

A beautifully nuanced performance of the Brahms 1st with a truly fabulous string sound. The principal horn deserves a special mention. Lloyd Cameron described this symphony as 'thunderous', which I guess might apply to the last movement. Loved the encore!

I think the principal oboist is one in a million too! (And I'm not a frequent oboe-fancier!)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Luxurious string playing but surely musicality to spare throughout. Those lovely lustrous double basses produced such a rich, dark, sensual sound in the gypsy-inspired pieces of the first half. The splendid Brahms performance was marred only by the idiot applause between movements, though I noted that Fischer sped on to the finale without a break after the the third movement, thus forestalling the knee-jerk clapping. An exceptionally satisfying concert!

Marred in your opinion. It's a music fesival. People are enjoying themselves and showing their appreciation. They are not idiots.

We'll disagree on that one. Perfectly happy to join in the enthusiastic audience response in the first half, but they could have left the Brahms symphony alone.

Just because someone doesn't follow your protocol and offends your concert-going sensibilities, does not make them an idiot - they could even be smarter than you

My protocol? I've been attending/listening to Prom concerts for quite a few decades and I'm afraid this is one relatively recent phemomenon I can't stomach. I don't think I'm entirely alone. "Idiot" may be too strong a word, but inter-movement applause just smacks of unthinking reflex action and at worst is an unwarranted interruption to the atmosphere and musical unity of a symphonic work. But I'm tired of making the argument.

Sure thing, they might even be bright enough to know that Brahms might have been happy to hear such approbation between the separate movements of the First Symphony over which he struggled for so long.
