'Twas bound to happen. With all the gasping from different presenters in recent times, the warning signs should have been heeded.

... and in some cases, the over-trailing is completely counter-productive. I might have been open to the charms of the music of Mr Bernstein : the trailers pushed me over the edge, and as a result I found many other rewarding things to be doing rather than succumb to the bludgeoning.

So - no, Jayne - the trailers are not always effective at drawing us to what we might wish to listen to.

I'm not sure whether TV trailers are meant accurately to reflect the nature or the content of the programmes to which they relate, but in most cases the last thing they do is encourage me to watch. If they have in some way misrepresented the programme in question, and I haven't already decided to watch it, I can rest assured that, sooner or later, word will get out (often via this Forum!) if a particular programme or series is worth watching and anything worth watching is in any case going to be repeated on some channel or other including the iPlayer and YouTube. As for the Bernstein trailers, they've become so all-pervasive as to form a kind of aural wallpaper which I have no trouble in ignoring- it's not as though each lasts that long. I shall watch Marin Alsop's Baltimore Prom because (a) I'm willing to make the acquaintance of the Bernstein (AND there's a top-class soloist!), (b) I'm a great admirer of Marin Alsop and (c) I'm always up for the Shostakovitch 5th. No trailer will either further increase my anticipation or cause me to have second thoughts.

This is quite funny really: on one "Bernstein" thread I get told off for being enthusiastic, recommending works and recordings, and trying to encourage others to listen, so I shouldn't really write anything here unless it's a contribution to a thread that should be called: BERNSTEIN TRAILERS COMPLAINTS DEPT.

But on the other almost no-one wants to contribute, because it's about last week's this week's composer... a third thread might be just a little self-defeating...so.

I remain dismayed at the sheer tetchiness of responses to posts which I always try to inject with a tone of friendly enthusiasm, "try it you might like it" etc...
You see, if you let the hype put you off the music, the hype wins.

Jayne - even at your most Tiggerish, your friendly enthusiasm is always a delight.

But your enthusiasm is not the synthetic hyperbole of Radio 3 trails. Which wd be endurable - if not repeated ten times a day for a fortnight.

              All best - eeyore.

There is a third thread, in the Composers subforum:

JLW: Don't think for one moment that your 'friendly enthusiasm' goes unheeded. I ordered the Sony box of Bernstein conducting his own works on the strength of your enthusiasm for LB's compositions as well as for the anniversary. In my own enthusiasm for Bernstein the conductor I've been guilty of overlooking the works so it's good to have a helping hand in approaching them.

As for the trailers, I take the Caliban approach and reach for the off switch once the handover back to Broadcasting House takes place. Other than that it's the mental off switch. Lord knows, I've had enough practice in that over the years!

If it's Try Cough Key, and too expensive to buy, maybe they should have it Borodin.

That works for me! LB even made it onto the BBC 1 10 o'clock news last night, with a brief report featuring the admirable Marin Alsop.
