    Binaural Proms.

As mentioned by Mr. Handley, last night, some Proms performances have been made available in binaural sound. So far, this appears to be confined to the First Night (though, sadly, the Knussen is not there). In addition, many Prom perfromacnes fromn earlier years can be found here. Unlike the original postings of these recordings, most of those available now have PIDs which make them 'get_able'. Well worth investigating for playback through headphones.

[More of this year's performances have now appeared.]

Latest list, as of 24th July:

Good to see the Mahler 8 and Beethoven 9 among those on offer.

Those availing themselves of these binaural recordings may, or may not, be happy to find that the recordings have been topped and tailed, but otherwise left intact. That means the 'ambient' between the first three movements of Beethoven's 9th, for instance, has not been trimmed of the audience contribution.

I'm surprised the 'Pioneers of Sound' (Prom 13) concert hasn't been made available in binaural. I would've thought it to be the perfect vehicle for the medium. Maybe it will appear later...here's hoping!

Having just listened to the excellent binaural Mahler 8, and having been in the hall (grand tier box), I have to say that the binaural version was preferable! Much detail was lost to me from my left-hand position vis-a-vis performers - notably the soloists. Very glad to have had this second experience at home. Of course the mighty choral sound was a great experience on the night.

That seems a very odd CD to have bought.

I'm bumping this up as many more 'tracks' [?] have been added to the Binaural Proms site - too many for me to list.

It's odd that this part of the website gives no performer information, as well as pre- and post-announcements being eliminated, and most are not even credited with the Prom number. But the sound is great, awesome even .

Just a reminder not to overlook the binaural Proms. Some fine Bernstein, Ravel and Verdi have been added in the past couple of weeks.

No sign of the promised Prom 66 in binaural sound, as yet. Let's hope it's just the day of upload that A McG got wrong.
