Caught out by the start time (D'OH! - dumb me), so logged on to iPlayer in the middle of the Kodaly. What I heard sounded very good from all involved, but then with Sakari Oramo at the helm, no surprise. Will have to catch up with the new work, and re-listen to the Kodaly later.

Sakari is wearing his OBE, look ...

Let's hope it is securely pinned because it is flapping around quite a lot

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Pretty good musically for the rest of Part I. I didn't realize that a day out at golf was the main inspiration for Sargent's An Impression on a Windy Day, but I should have guessed, perhaps. MS's work is perhaps larded with orchestral cliches about wind and storms, but it's very well put together and quite entertaining. Finlandia was very well done indeed, both from orchestra and choir. The Wagner was good, an OK contribution from Nina Stemme, not stellar, but good enough, IMHO.

Nice to hear Petroc chatting now with Harold Beck, recalling his early Promming days back to 1937. If I heard things correctly, he said that he was 13 in 1937. There's a picture of Mr. Beck with Petroc on Twitter:

What would you say are the principal differences between "Operetta" and "Musical", incidentally?
Musical snobery being the biggest difference!

Don't know how many are watching on BBC Two but it's been a bit of a rag-bag battle of the vibratos between Nina Stemme , Bryn Terfel and Ailish Tynan . How do you link from the Liebestod to 'If I Were A Rich Man'? Indeed should you ?

Boy is it raining in Swansea .....

Very much enjoyed the Kodaly Budavari Te Deum which I've not heard before but the only recording I can find is this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kod%C3%A1ly...eywords=kodaly

Presumably, it's self-recommending in view of the artists and label but has anyone heard it?

Just waiting for the BBC 1 TV relay to start. Every year I say I'm going to miss it and every year I'm glued to the TV! I'm just dreading the shouting from the Albert Hall to the various outdoor events.

It was funny when it was first done (was it as long ago as 1991?) but it quickly became embarrassingly silly.

I thought Stemme was disappointing, with gear changes in the voice and some splaying that's fairly recent, words that counted for nothing and a dead pan delivery. Waltraud Meier, even when past her best could and maybe still can tie knots in your stomach and bring out goosebumps. Didn't happen with NS

Thanks Bryn, don't know how I missed that. Duly ordered the single copy.

Damn. I now find you could have got a Very Good condition copy through amazon.com for somewhat less, though the p&p component makes up the majority of that lower cost. Always pays to check out several Amazon national sites.

We were going to try watching the tv with the sound off and the radio on but, inevitably, they're not in synch.
