That verse is in Elgar's arrangement too. There are even worse verses to be found.

      Lord, grant that Marshal Wade,
      May by thy mighty aid,
      Victory bring.
      May he sedition hush,
      and like a torrent rush,
      Rebellious Scots to crush,
      God save the King.

Not sure that would pass muster in the round Britain Hello Glasgow whirligig...

Although our Scottish brethren love to take offence at this alleged verse, it has never been part of the National Anthem. If it was ever performed at all, it would have been during the short period (3 months or so) in 1745 at the time that Marshal Wade was fighting the Jacobite rebels (and at a time when most Scots were opposed to Jacobites, and so would have been supportive of Marshall Wade's efforts).

The three 'official' verses of the National Anthem have always been largely the same as they are now.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Back in the days when CfP records were sponsored by tobacco companies!

In fact, does anyone remember the Sanderling/Philharmonia set of the Beethoven Symphonies that were boxed in the same bright red livery as the du Maurier cigarette packets?!

I do not need to remember it, I still have it. Similar packaging for Tchaikovsky Ballets conducted by John Lanchbery.

Consider yourselves fortunate you are not expected to learn the same anthem in three languages and sing them on the appropriate occasion. There is, fortunately, a one-verse option which scrambles all three languages.

As usual, I approach the LNOtP with a sinking feeling, mostly because it is the Last Night but also because it's another season gone all too soon.

Much as I dislike the flag-waving nonsense I do, at the same time, feel a strange compulsion to watch on TV. It is, like Remembrance Sunday, one of the markers of the passing year and it would seem odd without it.

Mind, as Barbirollians has pointed out, with Lucy Crowe and Nina Stemme on hand it will be worth watching.

And even worse "verse" in another of Elgar's works methinks

I don't know the Bliss version either of the National Anthem. Be good to hear. I do rather like Gordon Jacob's arrangement, though, with that strong fanfare at the beginning.

MrsBBM does rather like this night. As she has a penchant for the more popular items/ I suppose when it come to HW's Fantasy on British Sea Songs, they'll be doing the rounds?

I dare say. Hordes of people jumping up and down and waving at the camera Surely not going to have that 'Hello, Glasgow/Belfast/Swansea' routine again are we? It's like hearing the same stale joke repeated over and over again. As Sam Goldwyn might have said:'Let's have some new cliches'.

Yes, I feel that way too. And I always remember that this concert is repeated on Radio3 on Hogmanay so the end coincides with the the ringing of the bells that herald the start of the New Year.
