Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra weave together many of this season's musical strands into the exuberant celebration that is the Last Night of the Proms.
They mark the 50th anniversaries of the deaths of composers Zoltán Kodály and Malcolm Sargent (better known as the longtime chief conductor of the Proms), and celebrate John Adams's 70th birthday with the London premiere of his exhilarating Lola Montez Does the Spider Dance.
Music by Sibelius marks the 100th anniversary of Finnish Independence, and Nina Stemme, arguably the world's greatest living Wagnerian soprano, leads the end-of-season festivities.

Upbeat or what - the opposite of Britten's muted version:

... I know it from the CfP LP Crown Imperial, which featured Andrew Davies in (one of) his earliest recordings as a conductor:

I was thirteen and wanted a cheap recording of the Walton (the Handel was an added incentive, too).

I bought this in my younger days, and was very jealous of this young upstart, Andrew Davis.

              (I mellowed.)

It may a dull tune, but Sir David Willcocks really could make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

And three verses too! Including (as the second verse) the now less familiar:

                  "O Lord our God arise,
                  Scatter her enemies
                  And make them fall;
                  Confound their politics,
                  Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
                  God save us all!"

                        .
We need to take back control of our comma.

"He" hasn't - it left my possession (with many of my other LPs) about thirty years ago.

(Bliss conducted his own arrangement of the NA on the record - a rather gaunt AD conducts the rest.)

Well I did, but I really bought the LP as the cheapest way to obtain Crown Imperial. I'd completely forgotten the National Anthem arrangement.
