It took a while but I did eventually manage to convince work colleagues that all the Proms concerts I was going to are NOT like the Last Night!

A large proportion of regular prommers never go to the Last Night, even though they attend many concerts during the course of the season.
Their places are taken up by people who have managed to scrounge tickets by various means and bring their balloons and whistles for a riotous evening out. It's safe to say that they never attend any of the preceding 74 concerts.

There's no doubt that the experience does draw you in, but the enthusiasm and friendship in the Arena during those summer weeks is more satisfying

Anybody thinking you're going to hear the full Bliss version of Brenda's song, prepare to be disappointed.

Incidentally I have written a transcription of the choral version of Finlandia for concert band with organ as well. This will be performed at the end of term.

In an article in the Times today Nina Stemme says she will be singing some Kurt Weill songs on the Last Night but I cannot see them in EA's note of the programme .

That may be, but after queueing for an hour in the rain today I can at least assure you that the front five rows, at any rate, will be entirely filled with regular prommers.

BTW Are we really going to hear all those performers twice? (Message #1)

You are quite correct. I cut and pasted the programme from the BBC website, so the Weill songs may not have been listed then. Whatever the reason, they're there now, so I've corrected the omission.

In Castle Plantagenet this evening, we will be doing this in style, with various nibbles and Prosecco!!

Are Proms seasons shorter in recent years? I've tried using the Proms Archive to research this - but I don't think my lifespan will last the amount of time needed to navigate the website - but I remember that the Birtwistle Panic Last Night was the equivalent of a week later (16th Sept) and a Live broadcast of the Colin Davis Prom occurred after the Monday 11th September 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers, so, again, the Last Night would have been on Sat 16th September . Did those seasons with an "extra week" begin later, or has there been a reduction in weeks of concerts?

Thank you David, I naturally didn't mean to knock the dedicated team on the rail!

We all owe you a debt for all the hard work organising the collection through the season.

Do let us know the total when it's complete, and enjoy tonight!

2001 season began on July 20 and ran to Sept 15.

as a random comparison, 1970 ran from July 17 to Sept 12.

Just google Proms season archive 1970.

But do they cram more concerts in the shorter time available. ofcourse, the underlying factor, could be costs, etc?
