    Prom 73 - 7.09.17: Sir András Schiff performs Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier

    21:30 Thursday 7 September 2017 ON TV
    Royal Albert Hall

Johann Sebastian Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier – Book 1

    András Schiff piano

The two volumes of Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier together represent one of Western music's greatest achievements.
Once described as the 'Old Testament' of the keyboard repertoire, these two sequences of 24 Preludes and Fugues - one in every key - represent a wealth of musical invention, ingenuity and delight. A supreme technical challenge for any performer, they also offer an astonishing experience for every listener.
Sir András Schiff, whose discography includes Bach's complete keyboard repertoire, here performs Book I - embarking upon a cycle that he will conclude next year with Book 2.

Of course, technically speaking, this concert will comprise the whole of the Well-Tempered Clavier.

I still have a mini-disc of Mr. Schiff playing these from a late night concert at the Edinburgh Festival in 1997!

I think Bradley Lehman might think András Schiff will be playing something other than a Well-Tempered clavier.

I have his box set of JSB's keyboard works on Decca. Loved the Goldberg last year.

            .

... his move from being fiercely anti-HIPP to appreciating and understanding aspects of HIPP is of course heart-warming

( ... tho' I expect for the RAH he will not be using a clavichord.)

I very much doubt that the Steinway used will be retuned to Lehman's speculative temperament, either.

You can watch Uli Gerhartz tuning it live, right now! https://www.facebook.com/bbcradio3/p...98407893514426

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Aside from the staggering technical command and consummate musicianship how does Andras Schiff remember all the notes ?

Remembering all the notes is easy, it's getting them in the right order that's difficult*.

Grieg's piano concerto is a walk in the park compared to this ....

                          Mesmerising

The TV coverage a blessed change from the norm - no extraneous presenters, just a short piece to camera from Schiff before, and not a word said after: just applause, roll credits and finish.

THAT's the way to save licence fee money, and improve things at the same time.

It was mesmerising in the hall too - if rather hard on the legs, having also prommed at the Mahler earlier in the evening.
