I'm sure the Prom archivists on these boards will tell us, but when did the non-Classical stuff start - my guess would be back in the 70s with Soft Machine and Loose Tubes, but it certainly has accelerated in recent years. Yes ts I agree with you re more classical stuff and whether there is a place at all for the non-classical open to debate. Some of what has been put on would be more appropriate on Radio 2 and maybe there should be a Radio 2 Proms series to accommodate these.

I'm fairly certain that the Soft Machine Prom was the first.

What a great lineup for a gig! A gig not a Prom.

Well, one surprise guest, at least to me, namely Sam Moore, of Sam & Dave fame, now 81 years old, singing "Soul Man".

It isn't a Prom and Holland mostly irritates me but I am watching it now.

William Bell is magnificent for his age (but this music is one of my things).

              Eddie Floyd......my God.

I thought the sixties were dead.

The planet will end when the last of the sixties artists goes.

That is obvious to me - and has been for decades.

You would probably have to go back to early Henry Wood Proms for the first 'non-classical' Prom contributions. The Soft Machine occupied one half of 1970 Prom. They shared the Prom with Intermodulation, and the BBCSO under Elgar Howarth. The Soft Machine contribution can be found on a bonus CD with the re-mastered and re-issued Third album.

Be honest lat - you never really thought the sixties were dead. Not a prim Prom, maybe, but a great concert and a good recreation of the Muscle Shoals sound, helped by half the MGs being there, also great backing vocals.

Apologies for any pedantry but Muscles Shoals and Stax are similar but different. Muscle Shoals Alabama, Stax Memphis Tennesee.

I stand corrected, zola. The Stax/Atlantic scenario is at times confusing. Let's say that a very authentic soul sound was created in Prom 65!

Yes, tricky if you don't know your green onions......

Watched the telly version for a bit.
Frankly embarrassing and way, way out of its comfort zone. RAH is not the right venue and sure as heck the Proms not the right umbrella. Jules Holland must be short of a bob or two to allow himself to be part of a demeaning potpourri like this.

                                Watched it, and enjoyed it.

What a beautiful 'Tele' Steve Cropper was playing. Anyone know the make?

i can never remember whether it was Sam who threatened to shoot Dave, or whether it was the other way round.
                                Steve
