"The Pines of Rome" sounded great over my radio, despite some odd extraneous noises here and there. I thought the performance was splendid too and fully deserved the tumultuous reception it got from the bravo-ing Prommers. I know some people turn their noses up at Respighi but as Martin Handley said at the end, the Albert Hall is tailor-made for a work like that. He mentioned in particular the organ adding its massive weight in the finale and very effective it sounded. There's also a great organ solo in the "St. Gregory the Great" movement depicting a Papal Coronation that concludes Respighi's "Church Windows," so please, Proms organisers, can we have the Proms Premiere of that work too asap?!

Amazing at the quality of their playing, though, despite the mountainous problems they had with their instruments. be great to have a recording of The roman Trilogy from this orchestra and Chailly.

They had a very deep sound in the hall. After all, they were founded by Abbado in 1982 as a response to their own wish to play on the concert platform as well as in the pit. Giulini conducted them in more than ninety concerts, and Muti was Principle conductor from 1987 - 2005, so it'sa pretty good record of achievment. This was a very satisfying Prom, the Respighi needs the Albert Hall!
