Prom 25 - 2.08.17: Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir

    22:15 Wednesday 2 August 2017
    Royal Albert Hall

Heinrich Schütz: Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren, SWV 41
Heinrich Schütz:Nicht uns, Herr, sondern deinem Namen, SWV 43
Heinrich Schütz:Danket dem Herren, denn er ist freundlich, SWV 45
Johann Sebastian Bach: Cantata No. 79, 'Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild'
Johann Sebastian Bach: Cantata No. 80, 'Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott'

    Monteverdi Choir
    English Baroque Soloists
    Sir John Eliot Gardiner conductor

Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Bach's austere and beautiful Lutheran cantatas stand in contrast to the lively rhythms and rich textures of Schütz's music.

I do so wish that certain other professional choirs were as fine as this one.

I know what you mean, EA. Looking forward to this Prom. Don't know Schutz's music all that well.

Several their equal and they don't have to have JEG as their conductor. I'm thinking of Tenebrae, the Sixteen and Polyphony for starters. Many personnel are common to all.

Do we have to do this every single time any other choir performs anything?

Why not? The BBC trumps the BBC Singers as being the best thing since sliced bread, every time they appear anywhere on earth.

So it's good to appreciate other choirs.

Who said anything about not appreciating other choirs?

It's always making the same contrast I'm complaining about.

The BBC Singers have to turn their hand to any style whereas the Monteverdi Choir generally specialise in baroque and earlier.

Looks like this is one for making so with 'HD Sound' via the iPlayer 'listen again' facility. My Internet connection has failed again.and it does not look like a repeat offering 'Concert Sound' is scheduled. Ah well. Can;t win 'em all.
