      Hello Promgoer - and welcome! I take it that is a repy to bluestateprommer who couldn't 'recall ever hearing a recording or a live performance of Scheherazade where a female violinist took the lead role, until this Prom'. This one recorded 2010 on Onyx.
      It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

        This misogynist premise is taken up by John Adams in his Scheherazade.2 which was partly inspired by images of brutality toward or oppression of women around the world from religious zealotry, conservative cultural extremism and "even on our own college campuses"....he conceives the violin as a young woman with "grit and personal power" and sees Leila Josefowitz as the "perfect embodiment of that kind of empowered strength and energy that a modern scheherazade might possess."

        Fascinating piece, though quite long and very intricate! Rewarding repeated hearings... as ever. And very much more than a "worthy successor"....
