The RVW 9th was the first of his symphonies I heard live (Halle/Loughran in 1976) and I prepared for it by buying the LPO/Boult recording on EMI. I didn't take to it straight away but it's definitely worth persevering. Like so many pieces, once it clicks, it really clicks.

        I will!

In fact, VW is a composer whose work is quite foreign to me so I must listen more.

This reminds me that when 'Cala' issued the US Premiere of VW9 conducted by Stokowski, a critic on the new-defunct 'Classical Recordings Quarterly' was said to remark: "What a dreadful work that is."
