He played quite a lot of concerts with JB, 21 in total. He is also the Vice-President of the Barbirolli Society; says it all!

Not a bad pair of influences in Elgar - Jacqueline du Pre and John Barbirolli .

In introducing the Saturday Prom (rebroadcast this afternoon) whatever gave Clemency Burton-Hill the idea that Sibelius’s Violin Concerto and Elgar’s First Symphony were both written in the same year, 1904, and that both were subsequently revised? As Michael Kennedy has written, Elgar wrote the symphony between June 1907 and September 1908 and he came up with the marvellous motto theme on which it is based in June 1907, hardly time for any revision.

The original version of the Sibelius Violin Concerto dates from 1903-4, and is well worth a listen....
