I've only heard the San Francisco SO/de Waart recording so it'll be interesting to hear it live. Agree with Bryn that it's one of his better works,

At his best Adams' music is slick, spick and span. Good quality "Saturday Night at the Proms" fare but not built with sufficient originality to last. I fear that the only great music in the first Prom is the Beethoven. For those of us abiding in the sticks who must invest time and filthy lucre in getting to the RAH, 35 minutes of genius may be judged to be poor value in the Age of Austerity.

Who knows? Tom Coult might turn out to be "the new Beethoven"!

and as for a little painting, no bigger than 30" x 20", with only one person in it called Lisa ...

A fair point but the Beeb should have put their money where there mouth is and commissioned a substantial piece. To whet our appetites and then dash raised expectations five minutes later betokens faint commitment not blazing faith in a new genius who could become a cult figure. A major season needs a proper curtain-raiser and not a mini Dance Overture.

              Tonight's the Night!!

Thank you, EA for your stirling work to bring the Proms Programme before us.

Thanks edashtav for your timely return to the forum.

The example which you set of fair, unbiased reports on the Prom performances will be most welcome.

So what's not to like? Give an opinion for those other forumites who were not able to hear a particular night's performance but let's all keep those comments fair and without prejudice.

Point taken but it was not a knock-out, Zucchini, because time is a intrinsic element in music but an extrinsic one in Art - we can contemplate a painting for as long as we like -but once Gardner stops beating after 5/6 minutes, convention tells to clap and not to fall silent whilst we review and cherish Coult's miniature.

Lovely to hear your horn call echoing across the glens, along the chines and through the pine trees of Bournemouth, hornspieler. I fear I must disappoint you in my lack of objectivity: I'm rarely fair and so prejudiced that my pen is full of milk and honey before the start of any work by Boulez but is primed with bile before a Britten "Symphony".

I feel it's the prejudices of our fellow boarders that add so much sparkle to the cut and thrust of debates on FOR3, even though much of what we write is play-fighting. Just by naming two Bs, I have caused offence to one claque and identified with another, and in each case naming the protagonists isn't difficult: some use pseudonyms that are flags of allegiance. Mine reveals a concern for small towns, by the way!

Let's hope he's not the new Adams! By the way Ed it's not prejuduce so much as personal musical taste that drives the comments on these boards. On Britten's symphonies the ones without words are fine!

On my Venn diagram the sets of prejudice and personal musical taste are nearly coterminous, Cloughie.
Whilst BrItten's non-verbal symphonies are more symphonic than his Choral ones, each has serious, even life threatening, structural flaws. My prejudice? Britten was no symphonist!

You say Britten was no symphonist! A rather sweeping statement too!

Many think that the Britten 'Sinfonia da Requiem' is a masterpiece. After I heard Andrew Manze conduct the work with the Münchner Philharmoniker in Munich I became an admirer!

I feel a new thread coming on: Are we misled by titles of pieces (or somesuch heading)?
I could easily live without the Simple Symphony, and possibly the Spring Symphony, but would really miss the SdR and the Cello Symphony. Should he not have called them by those titles, I wonder? Would you then like them any more, edashtav?

A little over 10 minutes until we set the ball rolling. Here's to an enjoyable 2017 Proms season!
