    A "Prom" outside London too.
A step in the right direction, even if it is one of those gimmicky car park efforts.
The proms in Hull are in a car park?

I wish someone could explain the continued prominence of Daniel Harding. I have never heard him give a performance that rose above room temperature, and now he has the VPO to touch with his wand of mediocrity, who will probably ignore him - for the Mahler anyway.

Is there an army of Harding fanatics out there who can set me straight? Otherwise he seems like the David Frost of conductors, where you are left scratching your head at how he got where he is today.

Palestrina is there, but little else, indeed.

As to British Music: the commissions and world premiers of the BBC account for a lot of the list; missed the Grace Williams event going through the calendar. Still think it is a bit thin though, perhaps it is just that the last few years, there was always at least one special treat in the bag that you did not get to hear often, A Child of Our Time 2016, Gerontius 2015, Moerans Violin Concerto, Alwyn Symphony No 1, RVW Job. Walton Facade, Henry V., Elgar The Kingdom 2014, The little Bantock fest, Tippett Symphony no 2 and Midsummer Marriage, Britten Billy Bud, Dowland 2013 Elgar The Apostles, the Vaughan Williams 3 Symphony concert 2012, The Gothic, Bax 2nd Symphony 2011 ...

I suppose this year, that would be Elgar 3. It still feels like it's been spread thin.

If I'm bored enough, I will go through the lists and see if its just my spleen or if the numbers back it up.

              Some British Numbers

              2011: 31 composers, 68 works, apr. 1299 minutes of music, = 21,65 hours
              2012: 43 composers, 68 works, apr. 1654 minutes of music, = 27,57 hours
              2013: 37 composers, 90 works, apr. 1797 minutes of music, = 29,95 hours
              2014: 35 composers, 77 works, apr. 1699 minutes of music, = 28,32 hours

              2015: 37 composers, 53 works, apr. 879 minutes of music, = 14,65 hours
              2016: 41 composers, 56 works, apr. 738 minutes of music, = 12,3 hours
              2017: 30 composers, 44 works, apr. 958 minutes of music, = 15,97 hours

The spike in 2013 is due to the Britten festivities. That 2017 has more minutes/hours is due to the Elgar Cycle and Haendel Israel in Egypt (255 minutes are those 4 works alone). 2017 includes Saunders Molly's Song, Britten Russian Funeral and Daniel Saleeb Toccata on Erhalt uns ... which hadn't been listed yet. I might have missed one here or there, but that shouldn't have much impact on the overall results.

And his recent Symphonie Fantastique knocks spots off a lot of much-praised others.

His recording of Mahler 6 is actually very good, fresh and involving, I wouldn't expect that Prom to be a disappointment.

                    Oh, them again.

But it could still be one of the best Proms seasons for years.

A gig here would be perfect for some Elliott Carter

Many thanks for the statistics, Demetrius - I was going to do something similar this morning, but you've saved me the effort

Brilliant!!! I missed that - when is it on?

                        Britten Russian Funeral
Beggur! I saw that the first time I looked through the programme, but missed on the "Brit-specific" reading.

Daniel Saleeb Toccata on Erhalt uns ... which hadn't been listed yet.
Thou fib'st, sir! (It's 8 lines from the bottom, between Kate Whitley and Cheryl Frances-Hoad )

Interesting that the "British" number of hours, works, and composers has fallen so noticeably since Roger Wright left

There's certainly a lot more that I would want to actually go to than in the combined seasons of 2015 and 2016 - especially now that Demetrius has pointed out the Rebecca Saunders piece.

The usual omission, of course ... and nothing to celebrate Sciarrino's 70th ... and the under-representation of Music from before 1600 remains a serious cause for complaint.
