Prom 71: 7.09.16 Staatskapelle Dresden, Christian Thielemann and Daniil Trifonov

Forget the (fairly ungainly) podium manner, the politics and even the cologne (yuck!), see what results he usually gets...

The cologne may be what he needs in the Bayreuth pit when it is 40 degrees in Bavarian high summer, but could he not adapt to his surroundings?

That Rosenkavalier was damn good though. I even liked the huge pause before launching the trio...Naughty of me (and him) but it felt right.

Perhaps he was taking time to re-apply the scent? For the final waft through to the end?

His podium movements are horribly stilted and self-conscious and he takes an age to lower his baton at the end of a work.

Apart fom the unfinished Ninth, that does seem inappropriate whilst conducting a Bruckner symphony when surely spontaneous audience applause, inspired by a sense of triumphant joy, should erupt naturally at the finish?

Isn't the problem usually the other way round - audiences jumping in too soon? But anyway, one doesn't HAVE to obey the dictates of the conductor once his work is done!

Difficult to restrain oneself at the close of No.3, No.5 and No.8...

What a fabulous concert that was - I remember it very well! Matačić was an amazing conductor, and your beautiful horn playing is there for all to hear on the BBC Legends release of the Bruckner.

Very naughty, but VERY nice, I recall. I don't expect to see a finer live Rosenkavalier.

Just heard this concert in Dresden, wonderful.
Bruckner 3 is the 1877 2nd version Novak, running time was approx 61m.
The acoustics of the Semperoper are incredible and the Mozart K467 was sublime performance, it will be interesting to hear the Prom broadcast, the RAH is 3 times the size and while it will certainly accommodate the Bruckner very nicely, the Mozart may lose a little of the deftly nuanced performance that I heard tonight.
A truly great concert, definitely one burned into the memory.

I was in Dresden back in May for 12 concerts/operas mainly at the Semper Oper. The sound at the Semper Oper especially from the stalls is remarkable and the balcony is pretty good too.

Yes, that concert with Znaider was given back in June as part of their subscription series. IT will be given tomorrow night in Prague, then they bring both programmes to the Proms, then on their way home give the Beethoven programme in Grafenegg and the Bruckner in Munich. End of tour.
The Beethoven with Znaider was the best I have ever heard.
Just this morning bought tickets for the BPO and Thielemann giving Bruckner 7 in Berlin in December.
Thielemann and Bruckner, just the greatest.

For those less availing (and envious...) of travel or live attendance, this wonderful acoustic sounds excellent on disc too, featuring frequently in the Profil Hanssler Staatskapelle Dresden series, (Haitink Bruckner 6, Davis Child of Our Time & Mendelssohn 3/5, etc.)...

I always feel the Staatskapelle sounds better on these issues than the older Lukaskirche tapings with Jochum, Kempe, Sawallisch and so on, though some of these benefited from later remasterings.

I can only agree with those who say that Bruckner suits the RAH: I never miss an opportunity, when Bruckner 7 is on, to sit in the gallery and let the sound wash over me :) Only disappointed that I had to miss the 4 tonight: my trains were all screwed up, and I didn't think there was any chance of my getting in in time :(
