Prom 64: 2.09.16 - Berlin Philharmonic and Sir Simon Rattle – Boulez and Mahler
Mahler 7 was my first real experience of this composer having played in the Scottish premier back in 1987. I know it's not fashionable to say but this is, by far, my favourite Mahler symphony. It's just so OUT THERE!
It's as if he can't get his words out quickly enough.
Did he really say "this magnificently over the top symphonic victory ?
Why does he say Berliner Philharmoniker one minute and Berlin Philharmonic the next ?
I agree with Alison,SSR made it sound more like a concerto for orchestra.
I'm not sure I've ever really 'got' this symphony

I'm happy to be unfashionable w.r.t. the Seventh too. Not by playing in it but by listening to it on LP, it was the first Mahler symphony I really 'got into'. The First, Fourth and Fifth took me a lot longer. I have only heard part of tonight's Prom while driving home. Will catch it via the iPlayer and video hard disc later.
Breathtaking - but there's a horrendous iPlayer problem, at least right now there is: the broadcast ends ONE BAR from the end of the symphony (sorry for shouty caps, but the frustration is well-nigh painful!) I hope they get this fixed quickly - I'm still longing for the final chord.
Privilege to be present in the hall for this. Virtuosity at the service of music. BPO wear their peerless standard with ease. Both works were made for this hall. The Boulez drew you in to the delicate strands of sound. The faint, almost silences were magical and totally audible from the stalls and for once the coughers were stunned into silence as well. The Mahler grabbed you immediately with Rattle bringing many subtleties from the score. Tuttis were fantastic but it is the very quiet colours that stay in the memory. Rattle, BPO and Mahler were one. Bravo.

Reason: Typo
High octane virtuosity which didn't draw this listener into the symphony.
The virtuosity just takes over. Sorry.
I'm on your side of the fence on this, Alison - listening at home, couldn't put my finger on why it was leaving me totally cold, but that's probably it. Too many gestures and phrasings struck me as being 'for effect' rather than truly expressive. It's odd because on one level it's quite a showy symphony...
I can imagine the seduction of being in the hall, jonfan, with all those colours and shades! lucky you!

OMG if ever there was a penultimate chord that's begging for the final chord, that's the one!!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
Well, I listened to R3 and Martin Handley did not explode. Less is more with MH and it was handled admirably.
Is there any chance Mr Service could join BBC TV permanently?

It's all there now, including the fill-ups.
[Ah, you mean the one what needs a TV licence. No, that's still wanting resolution.]
