Prom 52: 24.08.16 - São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra

    22:15 Wednesday 24 Aug 2016 ON TV
    Royal Albert Hall

    São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra
    São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra
    Marin Alsop conductor

Following the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra's evening Prom, its musicians and Principal Conductor Marin Alsop are joined by members of the São Paulo Jazz Symphony Orchestra for a landmark celebration of Brazilian popular-music from the past 100 years.

Few countries can boast such an ingrained and individual popular music tradition as Brazil, and this feel-good Late Night Prom will take you from the African influenced rhythms and Chopinesque chromaticism of Brazilian street music to the outlandish constructions of the so-called São Paulo avant-garde - all from the best Brazilian players in the business.

A bit of a long haul this evening for some of these players, though I suppose it has nothing on a Wagner opera.

I only caught the last half an hour or so on a 20-year old little Sony transistor radio but the orchestra sounded as if they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. It reminded me of that Simón Bolívar Porm. And I was surprised to hear that the presenter was no other than Katie D.

I’ve just watched this out of curiosity and enjoyed it very much. I can’t say anything about its musical value but I thought it was a very good, unpretentious non-classical concert.

Just watching this now. Really enjoying it. Great advert for the "popular" type of Prom in my humble opinion. Lots of joyful romance.

I caught the full iPlayer run just before the deadline. Agree with your assessment of the concert. Regarding KD, she did fine in her intro, where she had the sense to get out of the way after her intro and let Marin Alsop take over talking duties between the selections. MA did work in her standard comments about inclusivity, but better that than the other side (especially on this side of the pond). It would have been cool to have the original Portuguese vocals for 'Garota de Ipanema', but one can't have everything .
