Jules Buckley and his Metropole Orkest return to the Proms to celebrate the career of composer, arranger, conductor, producer and all-round musical giant Quincy Jones. Recent musical partners of Quincy's join the longest-established jazz orchestra in existence as special guests to collaborate on new arrangements of hits both old and new - and the great man himself makes an appearance.

I do that often, but if I know what's being performed, I'm more willing to allocate a time slot for listening. Just not telling anyone is a bit like Breakfast.

On the Forum Calendar, we do now. In other words, I listened to this Prom via ear buds so that the rest of you don't have to ;) , and archived the playlist, hopefully completely. Pretty much what I expected, rather brash (with a few more restrained moments), and by the end, a bit wearing on the ears. It's fun to hear the kind of 1970's sound for a while, but it got to be a bit much by the end. SM-P was caught out a few times talking over intros to the next song, but then those were usually just the percussion warming up, and in fairness, she tried to squeeze in her intros more concisely as the evening went on. This is definitely not a "classical" Prom, not by a long shot, even if the interval talk mentioned that QJ studied with Nadia Boulanger. But if you're willing to accept that, then it's good clean fun, taken in small does. Plus, QJ did give a very gracious and heartfelt address to the audience before the last song.

For once, the TV presentation was vastly preferable to the radio broadcast - from what little I heard of the latter, poor Sara Mohr-Pietsch had to pop up between each number and announce it in slightly toe-curling 'trendy/cool' manner - whereas on TV the sequence of music in each half just rolled out without intrusion. Admittedly, the 'announcements' were achievable on TV by quick on-screen text giving title, arranger and performer. Much, much better.

Jacob Collier crooning to his own celesta accompaniment was magical.

A real treat with the HD recording for enhanced pleasure in watching the gig on TV. I kept the recording running but switched over to see the Quincy Jones interview as the closing item on Newsnight,(22Aug) -rejuvenating. Set up an overnight transfer to DVD before retiring and there was room for double pleasure as I added a further HD recording, Secret Voices of Hollywood, - the fascinating era of ghosting voices for star performers - and both programmes look pristine when I checked this morning. BBC 4 continue with TV Proms repeats for the rest of this week, around 22.00hrs except Friday, 26th Aug, 19.30hrs - Aurora Orch and an extra at 20.30- 22.30hrs; Budapest Fest Orch/Ivan Fischer Worth preserving for the autumnal evenings ahead!

Just caught up with the TV broadcast. What a vastly enjoyable evening! Laura Mvula outstanding, I thought, and the Metropole Orkest is a brilliant outfit. Great the see QJ himself at the end. Truly exhilarating.
