Proms at … Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare's Globe - 13.08.16

    15:00 Saturday 13 Aug 2016
    20:00 Saturday 13 Aug 2016
    Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeare's Globe

Purcell: Timon of Athens - Curtain Tune
    Purcell: I Spy Celia
Purcell: I See She Flies Me
Blow: Venus and Adonis - Excerpts
Purcell: The Fairy Queen - Excerpts
Locke: The Tempest - Curtain Tune
Draghi: The Tempest - Dance of the Fantastick Spirits
Purcell (attrib): The Tempest - Excerpts

    Katherine Watson (soprano)
    Samuel Boden (tenor)
    Callum Thorpe (bass)
    Arcangelo
    Jonathan Cohen (harpsichord/organ/director)

From one of London's biggest auditoria to one of its smallest - the Proms moves east for a celebration of Restoration theatre music at the intimate jewel-box that is the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare's Globe on London's Bankside.
This performance offers a chance to get up close with leading performers and Jonathan Cohen's crack Baroque ensemble, Arcangelo, which makes its Proms debut in works by Purcell, Blow, Locke and Draghi - including music for Shakespeare's The Tempest.

I'm feeling very cynical today. A collection of bits and pieces. A Breakfast concert without the chatter.

I only caught most of the 2nd half of this "Proms at....", with the Shakespeare theme and Renaissance selections. While I can understand EA's cynicism above, from the selection I heard, it actually went very well. Excellent musicianship, and skillful arrangement of various selections grouped by a given Shakespeare play into extended suites. No, it's not Beethoven, but on its own terms, it works. Will have to get back to the 1st half later on.

I very much enjoyed this Prom. I thought it was a well structured concert and both the singers and the ensemble were excellent. I thought the presenter was very good, too. She reminded me of Catherine Bott, being perfectly comfortable in what she was presenting.

But what’s this doing in the play list?

Just managed to catch the first half, and indeed the full program, of this Prom. If anything, re-listening to the whole program from start to finish confirmed that this was indeed a well-structured and very well-performed concert, as doversoul1 noted. Maybe a bit much of camp in the selections featuring the two male singers in the Purcell Fairy Queen selections, but all in good fun. Georgia Mann-Smith was the presenter, and while I can't make any comparisons to Catherine Bott, GM-S was clearly having a good time. Having seen the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse separately from this particular event, it's a very select audience indeed who got to see either of the two performances that day.
