I was present for Sunday's prom. The atmosphere in the hall was quieter and calmer than many a concert specifically designed for a young audience, and the comments regarding non-youngsters in the audience, with no children in tow is probably explained by the number of children participating whose parents were in the hall. I agree with the assessment of Wayne Marshall's Bach - loud and vulgar - and even the miked up presenters seemed subdued in comparison. But they in turn made the orchestra sound a bit anaemic, at least from where I was. I was mildly irritated by Haydn popping up all over the place, and by the Ring story coverage (it reminded me of a Dr Who episode) but otherwise it felt well planned. Not sure why we had a butchered 'Lark' or why one of the Carmen excerpts was missing; the question in my mind is simply whether the venue itself is just too big for an event like this? Sensory overload with the music just one element - did the target audience feel involved?
