Mrs. PG and I just watched the 'Proms Extra' programme and thought that KD did a good job of introducing and moderating it. I suspect that performing and 'emceeing' a gig is probably not a good idea. (Mind you Jools Holland is a master at this, IMHO!)

Not sure what that tells us, just curious. Oh, and I think we have realised by now that certain prolific posters do not warm to Katie Derham. Need this furrow be ploughed any deeper ?
I really like Katie Derham and I think she did an excellent job on this Prom.

Plus, perhaps an Absolutely Fabulous Prom might include a section devoted to traditional Nepalese music?

I thought twice about describing the Prom as ‘absolutely fabulous’, then thought, nah no-one will pick up on it ....

I can understand that some people would like the infantile, giggly presentation, but the existence of gross factual errors (quite common from this source) suggests the need for much extra training.

Have watched the TV version, finally, and it was an exact reproduction of the hype one expects from Strictly...so KD did her job perfectly and preserved the precious brand.

                    Actually I found it enjoyable.

It's kind of a lose-lose situation with these types of Proms. The BBC don't care how many people talk positively or negatively about them, as long as they're talking about them. Getting the word out there about the festival. These concerts are always the most-discussed ones on this forum (often more negatively than positively), which means they have achieved their objective. And as long as this remains the case, we will continue to get these concerts at the Proms, and possibly more of them, so that it just becomes a generic music festival.

If intelligent people can't agree about a descending g major scale I suspect there will never be agreement over the merits of this prom and KD. Sorry Caliban - still keen on the Nutcracker Pas de Deux - particularly in the over -the- top Pletnev piano transcription.

One of the most significant things for me about the SCD prom is the review that mentioned that the arena was half empty . The idea behind the prom would partly have been to get the power of a major global BBC One brand to boost a (how can I put it tactfully?) a minor one - Radio 3 and the (slightly bigger brand) of the BBC Proms . Radio 3 must have been cock -a -hoop when KD was selected for SCD - literally tens of thousands of pounds of free publicity for them on BBC One on Saturday nights . I don't blame them for wanting to extend the magic a little longer. They constantly have to put up with taunts along the lines of CFM getting bigger audiences on a fraction of the budget - even though of course R3's cultural contribution is so vastly greater. The problem is that audiences are complex and , in the case of the Proms audience , highly discriminating , and they tend to see through marketing ploys - hence the half empty arena maybe - or was it just the hot weather? A pity because it was enjoyable musically and by all accounts the dancing was first rate.

Yes, indeed, that fact (if it is such) casts some doubts on the notion of BBC trying to get any publicity as though better than none, for if the auditorium was at only around 50% capacity, it would appear to identify a "failed experiment" (as some EU leave supporters would vociferously describe EU - see the other thread); for what looks to be a popular easy listening Prom with superstar presenter KD out front and based upon an unquestionably popular TV series, one might reasonably have anticipated long queues for returns rather than the somewhat desultory attendance figures and the four-figure number of empty seats described.

Surely an analysis of seats sold would be a better way to judge this prom's success or failure? I wouldn't have thought many SCD fans ignorant of the way proms work would have said, "Let's go to this SCD prom-thingy, and hey it might be fun to queue for hours and then have to stand for the whole show!"
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Yes a bit, but wouldn't most people going to a "Hall" in London want seats?
