And who is the august music critic who penned those words of praise? Ivan Hewett? Rupert Christiansen? No, one Rachel Ward. Who she? Well, her page at the Telegraph advises that she has recently pronounced on such cultural pinnacles as East Enders ; Coronation Street; The Good Wife - or should that be a spin off from The Good Wife etc.

Do try, old Bean or should I say Courgette, to come up with someone with a tad more credibility to support your case in future.

It would be stupid to send either of these; they'd be out of their comfort zone. Would you send Jose Mourinho to report on the test match?

She seems to be also The Telegraph's Strictly Come Dancing correspondent.

"With Radio 3's Katie Derham at the helm, some might accuse the BBC of some mighty self-promotion but this is an obvious pairing, with the music for ballroom dancing being firmly ground [sic] in the classical repertoire."

I did intend looking for Ivan Hewett's review …
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

              Nuff said I think.

To be fair, if one sees the Prom in the light of a BBC Concert Orchestra prom then I can tolerate it (albeit with the radio switched off!).

However, I just wish the ubiquitous Ms Derham was just a trifle less well, er, ubiquitous.

And there surely hasn't ever been anyone denying that if this style of entertainment appeals to someone, that person will enjoy it. She puts her finger on it with: "some might accuse the BBC of some mighty self-promotion".

Yes, it is in my view, the BBC not (necessarily!?) the Proms director or Radio 3 that seeks to "boost the Proms" by attaching them to another popular BBC product. The rather obvious result is that it does something for that product and those who already enjoy it, but not a great deal for the Proms.

I don't know what Zucchini thinks of that opinion?

Having got that Prom out of the way, I must say I look forward to John Williams's annual appearance with his eponymous orchestra which is, presumably, made up of first-desk players from several major orchestras and bands. At any rate his "Gershwin Rediscovered" Prom next month is sure to be a sell-out. I suspect that the many You Tube uploads of excerpts from his previous Proms outings, such as this one of the delightful "Funny Face" Overture, may have helped to sell a few tickets. It is introduced by, yes you guessed it, and to quote Sir Velo, the ever-ubiquitous KD, one of the UK's foremost publicity-seekers ... :) ...

George Gershwin's Overture to his musical 'Funny Face' was played as the opening number to John Wilson's "Broadway Sound" Prom in 2012. The show was a big hi...

Wilson rather than Williams I would suggest?

That sounds close to the truth, but I think it's more about the BBC promoting itself. Why else would be having the endless drip-drip brainwashing of listeners BBC Radio 3 - The Home of the Proms ?

Ubiquitous, perhaps (and certainly as far as presentation is concerned) - but the "publicity-seeking" comment isn't fair. Not only is the competition vicious, and not only is a job in R3 the worst possible choice for such seeking, but she does nothing to seek "publicity", merely accepts the work she is offered by the Corporation. It is the Corporation that merits censure for every occasion on which she appears.

Well, I've reached the bit where I came in and I STILL think it's terrific! And now we can see the dancers which makes it even better!

I was going to give Radio 3's coverage of this event a miss but then noted that the 'fill up' for the Afternoon on 3 repeat. Now that what I call music.

Just watching the broadcast. By Thor's mighty hammer, that woman is annoying.
