    Television coverage 2016

Given Lunchtime's prediction in Private Eye that the Proms would be removed altogether from television, coverage here could be worse. The numbers are boosted a bit by having 7 (? one missing?) Proms Extra programmes (all on BBC Two - together with the G&I Gershwin/J Wilson; and Ravel et al, incl. Ustvolskaya, so presumably edited). First and Last Nights, as usual, live on Two and Four.

I think that leaves 17 concerts on BBC Four, including Strictly (is KD, she of the Infamous Foot, really listed in the Guide as 'presenter/dancer'?), Jamie Cullum, Bowie, Quincy Jones.

The 'classical music online part' of Lunchtime's prediction is partly answered by the fact that there will be 6 online (not clear how much of the concert will be included, whether it's live or not), some non classical: Gospel Prom, Wagner Die Walküre (Final Scene), Ten Pieces II, The Planets, Rihm and Strauss, and A celebration of Brazilian popular music from the past 100 years.

So, the remaining 13 concerts are (it's not clear whether the descriptions of the Proms are shorthand, or whether they mean only the works mentioned will be televised …):

    Red Proms broadcast live:

Sunday, 17 July - BBC Four- Prom 3: Mozart, Exsultate, Jubilate
Sunday, 24 July - BBC Four - Prom 11: Tippett, A Child of Our Time
    Friday, 29 July - BBC Four - Prom 18: Mahler: Symphony No. 3 in D minor/LSO-Haitink
Sunday, 31 July - BBC Four - Proms 20: Berlioz: Romeo and Juliet
Friday, 5 August - BBC Four - Prom 27: Tchaikovsky, Violin Concerto in D major
Tuesday, 23 August - BBC Four - Prom 21: Mozart Symphony No. 41 in C major, K551 ‘Jupiter’
Wednesday, 24 August - BBC Four - Prom 51: Marlos Nobre, Kabbalah (UK premiere) &c. - + Grieg PC
Thursday, 25 August - BBC Four - Prom 41: Berlioz: Overture ‘King Lear’
    Friday, 26 August - BBC Four - Prom 54: Mozart, Aria, ‘Per questa bella mano’, K612 - + Mzt Requiem/Bdpst Fest/Fischer
Sunday, 28 August - BBC Four - Prom 43: Wagner
    Friday, 2 September - BBC Four - Prom 64: Boulez - Mahler 7 BPO/Rattle

Sunday, 4 September - BBC Four - Prom 55: Mozart, The Magic Flute – overture

Friday, 9 September - BBC Four - Prom 74: Verdi: Requiem

E&OE I hope what I've put is accurate, but full details are on one or other of the BBC Proms listings.

One thing that is welcome is that far more concerts this year will be shown either live, or at least on the same day that they were given. This may also account for them being given complete, rather than cut to bits and shown piecemeal on a variety of later dates as part of 'curated' programmes, as happened last year.

It is also interesting that it appears that the late night proms will be shown at a similar time on BBC4 after regular proms concerts, rather than in place of them; both the Bowie prom (which may be live) and the Jamie Cullum prom are being shown after live (or nearly live) relays of those evenings concerts.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I must say, the fact that many concerts will be shown on the night gives cause for optimism that we will have the concerts in question broadcast complete. We might be talking of nothing more than an hour delay, maybe. And hopefully too that means the presentation will come from inside the RAH itself, adding further to the idea that the Proms is an Event rather than a curated, made-for-television TV Show.

Interesting to note, if the info in above post is correct, that the First Night is split between BBCs 2 and 4. Prokofiev too difficult and modern for BBC2? Aww...

BBC Two just has the knees-up, because everyone enjoys that
