Reminders to me as to why I do not enjoy the Proms.

In the words of Ernest Thesiger, describing his time in the trenches during the Great War - "Oh, my dear, the noise! and the people!"

...and then promptly got back to his needlework! Thanks, Vints, hadn't heard that gem before.

its all a bit " masonic ", isn't it? nudges, handshakes, knowing the right police officers, that sort of thing.

what is your precise query? surely it goes.... turn up sometime after off -peak starts on the tube, hang around the RAH without looking too dodgy for several hours, pass time with Vinteuil, have a fiver, sorry six quid ready,( no crap jokes about sick squid, they are going to get very boring), listen to concert, take snap of illustrious maestro, go home via pub.

Incidentally, anybody know why there are none of those useful street corner map things near the Houses of Parliament.

        Bloody annoying.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

I have forgotten what my query was.

What I do is I write that sort of thing down on a post-it note.

For people who feel apprehension about attending a Prom for the first time, an exemplary description.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

He left out "collect cloakroom ticket from Steward (vital)", "experience sticker shock at bar prices", "get unwittingly involved in argument about pushing in" and "get mulcted by over-zealous charity collector".

All of which suggests that the best place to catch the BBC proms is from the safety and comfort of one's listening room!
