Bah! I realise that no-one ever reads anything which I post (not that I blame them for that) but, to requote my Post No 63:

"If anyone is at all interested, Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle are appearing on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th September in two programmes dedicated to the 2VS .... OK, I made that last bit up (although CT, whom I have abused elsewhere for his musical conservatism, is performing Schönberg later in their season - Pelléas and Mélisande to be sure but at least it's an advance on Wagner and Strauss).

In fact the programmes over the two nights consist of a Mozart PC (KV467 - with Daniil Trifonov), the Beethoven VC (Nikolaij Znaider), Bruckner's 3rd (1877 edition), Reger's Mozart Variations and Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel. Fabulous orchestra, not quite so sure about CT ....."

So, in American-ese, that's

9/7/16 & 9/8/16 Dresden Staatskapelle/Christian Thielemann with Daniil Trifonov and Nicolaij Znaider (don't who is on which night).

Corrected my earlier post; thanks for pointing it out. I think your snark about the 2VS threw me off initially, and induced a momentary brain clot on my side (totally my bad, of course). Plus, must confess that I'm danged if I can find a link with that info. I struck out on the Staatskapelle's own page, for one.

PS: OK, dumb on me, finally found it, and it was under my nose all this time, electronically speaking. In fact, the Staatskapelle's brochure even brazenly shows a picture of the RAH with the Proms logo prior to its tour section:

Well, BSP misspoke, and found one more advance tidbit, via composer Tobias Broström's website:

Not sure how to square the circle here. Anyway.....

The real problem is that Holst's Planet Suite is hauled out almost every year at the Proms (obviously the BBC's commitment to contemporary music sorted): now it's a great favourite of mine but what of his other pieces? How about 'The Hymn of Jesus' or one of his chamber operas like 'At the Boar's Head' or 'The Wandering Scholar'. They would go down a storm at the Proms were they ever to be produced at the Albert Hall (which they won't be, but in my dreams).

I recall attending performances of several other Holst works at the Proms in recent times. 'Beni Mora' in 2014, and perhaps more surprisingly both 'The Hymn of Jesus' and the '1st Choral Symphony'. Upon consulting the archive it seems the latter were in 2004 and 2009 - tempus fugit and all that. So, it does, or can, happen.

The general point stands though. There is a massive imbalance between performances of 'The Planets' and... everything else. The history of Holst at the Proms goes: Planets - 86, Perfect Fool - 37 (only 4 since the 1960s), St Paul's Suite - 6, Hymn of Jesus - 5, etc...

This seems to reflect the general pattern - if anything, an "others" count greater than 0 over recent decades reflects the Proms being more generous in that respect than other concert series.

I'm still waiting for anyone anywhere to do 'The Cloud Messenger' - without much expectation!

(One movement of) Shostakovich 10 is of course one of the set of Ten Pieces II, so will get two outings!

Good there's the four-minute movement, though I prefer the symphony's last four minutes, which seems to be Shostakovich himself, rather than Stalin
