I think this was mentioned somewhere. IF that's the case (and I can hardly believe it), I suggest a 'mass' protest, with people writing letters to the various people with responsibility for classical music and television, particularly to the Director General (the BBC Trust may have been on the point of abolition by then).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I don't care about TV Proms anymore, since they stopped broadcasting the concerts in full, as they happen.

If anyone is at all interested, Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle are appearing on Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th September in two programmes dedicated to the 2VS .... OK, I made that last bit up (although CT, whom I have abused elsewhere for his musical conservatism, is performing Schönberg later in their season - Pelléas and Mélisande to be sure but at least it's an advance on Wagner and Strauss).

In fact the programmes over the two nights consist of a Mozart PC (KV467 - with Daniil Trifonov), the Beethoven VC (Nikolaij Znaider), Bruckner's 3rd (1877 edition), Reger's Mozart Variations and Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel. Fabulous orchestra, not quite so sure about CT .....

In recent years, items from Ilan Volkov's Tectonics Fests have been brought to the Proms. I have no inside information to support this but would hope that the BBC commissioned Piano Concerto by Howard Skempton will make it to the Proms this year with John Tilbury again as the soloist (he, the BBCSSO and Volkov perfornm the premier in Glasgow on May 7th.

Wait, do you mean that the Glyndebourne Prom will be The Barber of Seville? That would be the unimaginative choice, although the hall might well sell out (and it would be the first complete performance of Barber at The Proms). The run of Barber at Glyndebourne ends just at the end of July, so the cast might be primed for a one-off semi-staged version at the RAH. The only other possibility that I can see is The Cunning Little Vixen, but that would mean two Janacek operas in one Proms season, because Friday, August 19 is Věc Makropulos, with Belohlavek conducting the BBC SO and Karita Mattila in the lead role (per Universal Edition's website). Two Janacek operas in one Proms season sounds extremely unlikely. But I could be wrong (have been before).

BTW, following up on savoir_faire's post # 35, the NYOGB concert is confirmed via Boosey & Hawkes' page on composer Iris ter Shiphorst:

Classical music and jazz composers. Choral, opera, ballet, orchestral, chamber, piano, strings, concert and brass band music repertoire.

Celebrated as ‘the world’s greatest orchestra of teenagers’, the 160 teenagers of NYO play epic music and shape shift into different ensembles.

                Saturday 6 August 2016

Iris ter Shiphorst: Gravitational Waves (London premiere)
                Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra
                Holst: The Planets

                Edward Gardner, conductor
Choir: ??? (maybe young ladies from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain?)

Even though The Planets is getting yet another outing after hearing it last year, I think that this Prom should be a lot of fun. The Iris ter Shiphorst work gets its world premiere 2 days before, at Snape Maltings.

I just hope they wander off the beaten track a little this year and seek out some of the less popular composers. There's an obscure Austrian - Maler, I think his name is (sp?) - who never seems to get a look in because the schedule is crowded out with the usual glamour boys like Haydn and Bruckner. I know they have to get bums on seats, but the poor guy deserves an airing once in a while.

Maler eh? You're not thinking of Christopher Painter are you? Mind you, he's Welsh, not Austrian.

Every year I write several times both to the BBC and the Times bemoaning the appalling dearth of music by Gustav Mahler in the Proms. Apparently his symphonies are of massive length and some involve considerable vocal forces alongside the orchestra, which sounds interesting to me and surely I can't be alone in this, but how are we ever going to know if the BBC continues the spiteful boycott of his work whose continuation we have rightly come to fear from the appearance of the Proms brochure year after year? It may seem like a hopeless quest but I hereby give notice to the BBC "top brass" that I for one will not give up my campaign until at least one of his symphonies is performed once a decade or more.

I am nearly as appalled by the neglect of The Lark Ascending at the Proms .

Getting back on track (ahem; someone has to keep you lot in line, it seems, even if it's an American )....

I finally connected the dots with ferretfancy's post # 49; in all likelihood, the Glyndebourne Prom will be The Barber of Seville, if for no other reason than 2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the opera. Took a while to dawn on me.

Elaborating a bit on earlier posts by savoir_faire and Howdenite:

                          (a) July 30, 2016 will be the ORR/JEG Romeo et Juliette Prom, via singer Davina Clarke's website
                          (b) The September 4, 2016 Semiramide Prom features singers Albina Shagimuratova, Daniela Barcellona, Ildebrando D'Arcangelo and Javier Camarena, with Sir Mark Elder on the podium (Opera Rara page here).

In addition, I found from Vadim Gluzman's page this tidbit (emphasis mine):

"In 2016, he will give the World Premiere performances of a major work by Lera Auerbach for violin, orchestra and chorus with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and culminating with BBC Symphony at the London Proms."
The world premiere of this Lera Auerbach work was just last week in Bergen. Maybe EG will return to lead the BBC SO in this particular Prom?

What are the odds of a Brazilian composer being on the programme on the night of the Rio Olympics opening ceremony? (August 5th)

I agree ... I've been desperate to hear some Maler for years but there seems to be some sort of conspiracy at the BBC to prevent Prommers from enjoying performances of his obscure works. Brams is another much-neglected composer who deserves far fairer treatment.

We've had Bruckner Symphonies No 0 twice in the last few years and that's more than enough for anyone, and Haydn never seems to be haydn much at the Proms these days.

More Maler & Brams, please! Are you listening, BBC ... ?

(Well, nothing else has worked, )
