Many many thanks for these sadly illuminating stats, SC. Not even one for Koechlin or Milhaud. Absolutely disgraceful exhibition of philistinism on the part of programmers of the Proms over my lifetime.

No Khachaturian in that list. I'd love to see/hear his first two symphonies performed at the Proms; and his 3rd might be fun for the last night :)

Thank you Bryn - as a Nottingham lad, it is shameful that I have never ever heard this (despite occasional curiosity, preceding complete failure to pursue it).

I am now listening to this version, which - on a spot comparison - I marginally prefer to the BBC recording you feature: this is the Dutton issue, Royal Scottish National under Martin Yates

Sounds like very good stuff to me !! Used to sneak out of school and go to Goose Fair (Mvt. 4) !

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

              I found this interesting:

....particularly the astonishing volte-face by the BBC banning AB's works in 1941, then granting him a very public rehabilitation in allowing him to conduct his Symphony in C at the Proms a year later ! Also notable is the 1986 "Lascaux" Symphony recording by the BBC Phil & the indefatigable Ted Downes, which I hope survives in the BBC Archives..

That might well happen. Donadl Runnicles is conducting the BBCSSO at the EIF and it might be that they visit the Proms

Were I really fortunate, and Mr Blakeman was in a good mood, I should like to hear the Symphonic Mass at the Proms, surely his masterpiece. I was lucky to meet Lloyd once at ENO when he was there for Britten's 'Peter Grimes' and he was so nice giving me his autograph. A very fine composer, whose music should be more widely heard (but won't).
Apologies, Colonel. I've just caught up with your post. I was lucky enough to meet George Lloyd when he conducted his, iirc, Ninth Symphony at the Three Choirs Festival circa 1988. He autographed a cd for me and was such an engaging man it started a lifelong interest in his music.

One day, I'm going to win enough money on the Lottery to be able to afford a series of recordings of the complete symphonies with Sir Simon and Die Berliner Philharmoniker!
