Prom 71: St. Petersburg PO (8.09.15)

    19:30
    Royal Albert Hall

Rimsky-Korsakov: The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh - 3 symphonic pictures
    Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
    Elgar: 'Enigma' Variations

    Julia Fischer (violin)
    St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
    Yuri Temirkanov (conductor)

German violinist Julia Fischer joins the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra for its second concert, as soloist in Tchaikovsky's much-loved Violin Concerto - a work in which concert-hall sophistication balances rustic folk-simplicity, overflowing with tunes and climaxing in a dazzling rondo finale. Big tunes - or, at least, one big tune - also dominate Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, his affectionate musical portrait of friends and acquaintances. The concert opens with one of Rimsky-Korsakov's finest scores, the 'three symphonic pictures' adapted from his 1907 opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh - a work sometimes nicknamed 'the Russian Parsifal'.

I do wish that whoever writes all this stuff would be brave enough to sign it.

Really looking forward to this one! The Tchaikovsky fiddle concerto is probably my favourite violin concerto and Ms. Fischer is a great advocate. Andrew McGregor has just tweeted some back stage photos as a preamble to tonight's festivities.

Wow! Fantastic playing from Julia Fischer and the Orchestra. A truly memorable performance!

          Bravo!

Very strange hesitation moment on the very last chord of the Tchaikovsky, but that aside, JF played the work very well indeed, as one would expect. She also just knocked the Paganini Caprice No. 17 encore out of the park, of course (kind of amusing that hearing her on-stage comment about "there are 24 of them, I have to choose one!" telegraphed instantly that the encore was Paganini). Good solid opener of the Rimsky-Korsakov Kitezh selection from the orchestra as well.

"Part deux": Just heard the encore of Elgar's "Salut d'amour", nicely done. Slightly quirky interpretation of Enigma here and there, but quite good overall. Nice to hear the RAH organ unleashed in the finale. I've heard Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Phil perform "Nimrod" as an encore, once in San Francisco. 2nd encore, the "Vivo" from Stravinsky's Pulcinella just started.

A refreshing orchestral palette from St P. Perhaps Enigma didn't quite thrill as much as initially seemed likely.

Glad I didn't book for this one. Serviceable but not revelatory. The Rachmaninov yesterday was in a different league. Haven't heard the R-K live for about thirty years and it was superb. The F da R was lacking the kind of frenzied passion and turmoil NYOGB gave it with Chailly back in 1980 - a cherished off-air tape!

I always worry about the gaps between movements of the Enigma. Too long tonight? (Was a naughty Prommer imitating the tapping of an impatient baton in one such?)

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

No mid movement applause in Prom 70 - very annoying to hear it in the Tchaikovsky - broke the spell woven by the magical Ms Fischer .

Why does this irritating and selfish clapping between movements only seem to happen at the Proms I wonder ?

It was a terrific performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto - last time I heard it played that well the soloist was Ida Haendel ! In the early 1990s .

To each their own . I found that Rachmaninov pedestrian and routine .
