A brilliant review of the Mahler from Jayne and yes the first half of the concert was a winner!

I thought that the orchestra were finding their way a little bit at the outset, getting used to the hall acoustic. There were one or two transitions in the busier passages of the Mahler 1 which seemed a bit ragged to me. Earlier, in the RCM interview, Tim Higgins the principal trombone, said that he was disconcerted to discover that he could blow a note and wait for it to leave and get there!

I enjoyed the performance, but every time I hear the piece it seems a kittle more kitsch. I'm looking forward to the Eroica tonight.

Wow! JLW! Done it again! A very wrapt review of this concert, from someone that hasn't heard it yet but with the might of your talented writing skills, left me in no doubt whatsoever that the Mahler should not be heard, as it should be, with a European slant but perhaps should adopt a more West Coast-Pacific feel? This is what it would sound like over there?

I went to hear MTT conduct Mahler's 5th with the LSO years ago - he managed to make it sound like Gershwin, and I vowed never to pay good money to hear him in Mahler ever again. The strong reviews accorded to his recorded series in the US more recently made me wonder if I should reconsider. But it sounds like he's at it again...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

All I know is that the MTT/SFSO Mahler recording has plenty of cucukoos...
