Not having chanced upon many proms, yesterday I did chance upon this, upon the car radio.
I'd not heard the Nielsen flute concerto before, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It sounds unequivocally as if he wanted to compose it, if that's not too odd a thing to say. Seems unconstrained, built almost from nuance and temperament alone. One might feel the music to be following the whims of a film which you never see. Really attractive array of shifting timbres coaxing one in. A door seems to be opening in the Nielsen world for me I'm happy to say. (re #8 - Is there meant to be a feeling of struggle?)
In the Sinfonia da Requiem, the peripheral presence of other composers seems often quite close to the surface. It's a work I really do like, riddled with atmosphere and luminous edges. A pretty darn fine way to spend 20 mins when I consider some of the options. A pretty darn fine performance too I thought.
I haven't heard the Janacek Sinfonietta for a considerable time (... the relationship had been experiencing some wear and tear). It was really good to hear it again, and in a performance that seemed out of its office clothes, as it were. The opening sounded rather more neurotic than usual, with less pomp than one sometimes gets, which I liked a lot. Extraordinary music that seems to carve itself into the air, no home should be without one.
Didn't quite make it to the end of the Yiu, it didn't speak to me, or perhaps I not to it. May try another time.
I thought the works complemented each other interestingly. Interestingly.
