Proms Chamber Music 6: Jeremy Denk (24.08.15)

    13:00
    Cadogan Hall

Jeremy Denk plays piano sonatas by Bartók, Scriabin and Bartok, live at the BBC Proms.

    Bartók: Piano Sonata, Sz.80
Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 9, 'Black Mass'
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111

    Jeremy Denk, piano

Jeremy Denk is one of America's foremost pianists - a musician the New York Times hails as someone 'you want to hear no matter what he performs'. He makes his BBC Proms debut in a recital that puts Beethoven's final piano sonata at its core. It's a work that blends extrovert passion with a depth that characterises all of the composer's late works. The programme opens with Bartók's Piano Sonata, a piece strongly coloured by Hungarian folk melodies and rhythmic attack; and we mark the centenary of Scriabin's death with his most famous piano sonata, the 'Black Mass' - a disconcerting, phantasmagorical musical journey.

The Bartok usually plays for about 15 minutes, the Scriabin 10; so that leaves the Beethoven at about half an hour. Not one of my fave late Beethoven works, I have to say.

Jeremy Denk will be performing here in the National Concert Hall in February. Programme: Mozart Rondo in A minor K.511; Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 30 op. 109; J.S. Bach Goldberg Variations.

His recording of the Golbergs is sufficient encouragement for me to rush to see him in concert. I'm really looking forward to the experience.

Where did they get the piano from, the local pub? V poor instrument prep. that spoilt my enjoyment of the Beethoven (having missed the earlier pieces) although the boogie woogie section sounded right.

The "house" piano is a Steinway Model D, serial number 565412.

They don't come much better than that.

But I agree there was something amiss. It sounded clangy, and with highly suspect tuning.
