Well it was almost 50 years ago, for Pete's sake!

IMHO, Horenstein's Stockholm PO live recording is one of the few that can stand alongside Tennstedt, Abbado and early Bernstein in this awe-inspiring work]
    Yes. That was the occasion.

Anyway. It has livened up the usual Sunday morning lack of contribution from message boarders, and has lifted the discussion to interesting levels; which I confess was partly my reason for inviting the expected response from certain fellow members, to liven up a dull and boring wet Sunday morning.

    Have a nice day.

You didn't happen ever to work for Tony Blair, did you, HS?

Lovely sunny day here in the Pennines - plenty of gardening done before the forecast storms.

As in "the Campbells are comin'"? (only it would seem that they're already here)...

Does that mean that I'm in the Soup?

Only by virtue of putting yourself there if so, methinks!

In his Conversations with Peter Heyworth, he expresses no opinion of the Seventh Symphony, and affectionately recalls his working with Mahler on the premiere. (And OK isn't backward in coming forward with his opinions of other works in these discussions!) He also recorded the work - a performance that might well give substance to the idea that OK hated the work, but odd that he was persuaded to record a work for which he had no sympathy.
This was a comment made by a Critic in a review of a recording that I read recently. I don't save my back issues but it probably was a review in Fanfare, which had gone to some length discussing the problematic history of the 7th.
Perhaps he changed his mind later?

the clapper was, sadly, in the arena, just to the right of the camera position that was awaiting the following concert. I can however report that the prommer immediately to my right went to remonstrate with the idiot.

David, it really is so sad - isn't it? - setting aside the whole argument about clapping between movements, shouts of approbation, etc etc, that someone feels it necessary to set off, as at some level they must know they will, 4,999 others, to affect the pleasure of the hundreds of thousands listening (and who will listen later) who would have preferred even a modest two seconds of silence to this narcisstically insensitive assault on silent contemplation.

Interesting to listen again to this concert the other afternoon. I was curious to know if my opinions had changed. Not one iota. At least this time I had the pleasure of switching off the radio for that egregious Brett Dean noise. And that Mahler 6 just did not do anything for me and about halfway through I'd had enough and listened to Abbado's version instead. Far more musical to these ears.

I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing what Sir Mark Elder and the Halle make of it on October 8th. I happen to think it's Mahler's best although not my favourite.
