    Prom 45: RPO/Dutoit (19.08.15)

    19:30
    Royal Albert Hall

Charles Dutoit conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Shostakovich and Debussy, and Elizabeth Leonskaja joins them for Mozart's E flat piano concerto.

Debussy (orch. Henri Büsser): Petite Suite
Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat major, K482
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 15 in A major, Op 141

    Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano)
    Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
    Charles Dutoit (conductor)

It has been almost 30 years since the celebrated Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja last performed at the Proms. She makes her return alongside the internationally renowned conductor Charles Dutoit, in Mozart's majestic E flat Piano Concerto. Written concurrently with The Marriage of Figaro, the concerto shares much of the opera's grace and its abundance of tunes, as well as some strikingly lovely woodwind textures. Shostakovich's 15th Symphony is an altogether darker affair - intimate and introspective. Musical memories haunt the score as the composer searches for meaning in what he surely knew would be his final symphony.

Shostakovich 15 may be a "darker affair" than the two pieces in the first hall of the concert, but it's positively sparkling compared with nos, 13 & 14.

      I can't really imagine Dutoit leading a decent 15

My immediate thought, too - but we can hope. (And I can't decide whether following a work in Eb with another in A is genius or idiotic programming. Given the 15th, I'll opt for the former!)

Well at least there will be applause and an interval to let your ears readjust!
I hate it when the final hymn in CE is followed by an immediate launch into an organ voluntary in a completely unrelated key, too!

Well that's an aural shock that is fairly easy to avoid... even though I am a very part-time/ deputy organist, I don't find it too arduous a task to transpose the final hymn into the key of the voluntary that follows.

The alternative of course would be to transpose the voluntary into the key of the hymn. I wouldn't fancy that too much if the Hymn was 'Jerusalem the Golden' and the voluntary Widor's Toccata from the 5th Symphony...!

Apologies by the way as this is way off-topic!

There's an interval between the two.

And give the poor man a chance. The performance is still a week in the future.

                    Atonality resolves this...

                        Oh, very clever

According to the BBC, the Mozart is in the first EPISODE, and the Shostakovich in the second EPISODE.
