I was in the arena tonight. The thought that I had about the opening movement of the fifth was that I had the strong feeling of ( some of) the players having to be led through the movement, but " tentative" would do at least as well. I felt the second movement was done justice to, and I really enjoyed the third movement, which seemed to me to have a lovely flow.
I learned a lot about the 6th from hearing it close up and personal.
The 7th was excellent. It must be a difficult piece to conduct, and Vanska seemed to have kept his most intense efforts for it.
i might think of more to say in the morning, but got to be up early for work.
However, I must single out the woodwind they were really stellar tonight!
I had the pleasure of the company teamsaint and his daughter and fiancee, who may have seen/heard it differently!
No stoppin' you, Beefy.
I have No 7 recorded for a proper listen. What did you think of that in particular? Teams seems to think it was the best of the lot in the concert.
.
PS: Maybe in your post, that should be fiancé? (Call me old-fashioned).
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not team's fiancée, then?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I'd say you were making an assumption, which might or might not be associated with either being old fashioned or with a typo from Beefy! Covered by your 'maybe', of course!

I'd be with teamsaint on that, but again I'm not sure whether it was because it's better music than that which went before. Of course 5 & 6 are examples of wonderful music.

TS junior # 3 will be surprised and no do doubt delighted to find herself with a new fiancé ....unless she has some news she has shared with Beefy but not with me !

Well he has invited me to drop in for a bite if ever I'm down his way!
I wonder whose sandwiches would be on offer!
It all sounds very euphemistic to me

I enjoyed the fifth; the sixth was a revelation - I'm not at all sure that I've ever heard it before, or at least with concentration.
It all came abruptly to an end, while I was enjoying the much-looked-forward to seventh, with a telephone call which took me away from the remainder of the concert.
But I'm left with a clear desire to acquire a complete set of Sibelius symphonies, as I own only the second.
Recommendations for a box set, please?
Paavo Berglund, if a set exists.
As a pupil and confidant in the house of the great master, Berglund's must be considered to be the most authoritative readings; but having played them all (and other works) under his baton, I am understandibly biased.
Sir Alexander Gibson was a noted interpreter uf Sibelius with the Scottish National Orchestra. Has that influenced the BBC Scottish Orchestra? ( Or is it that Scotland, like Finland, can be a cold place in the Winter months?)
I really do get the impression that too much is being asked of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the present time. They give some good performances, but I do feel that, with all those changes of Leader and Principal players, they are unable to settle in the way that the BBC Scottish, BBC Philharmonic and BBCNOW have, who, to me, sound more comfortable in their performances, regardless of who is on the podium
Most orchestras have a recognisable style - the BBCSO is much too variable; depending on all those constant changes of personnel.
Three exist, with some south coast provincial band or other (my favourite), with the Helsinki PO , and with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Then there are other recordings of individual symphonies, including a couple in the RCO Radio recordings big box.
