I wonder what kind of an audience the BBC had in mind when it programmed this, or what the thinking behind the choice of the theme.

Sunday afternoon? Slightly odd - a bit like the Doctor Who Proms but with those would be 'pressure' from children and parents. Looks as if there are only a few boxes still available.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Great, isn't it? I always wonder whether Sir Arthur had ever heard any non-polyphonic motets. I don't think I have.

          A simple Venn Diagram of

          People who like music
          People who like film music
People who are keen on Sherlock Holmes

I suppose there are quite a lot of holidaymakers who are looking for something ‘nice’ to do on Sunday afternoon. Or come think of it, this is probably a good alternative to The Phantom of the Opera (is it still on?) for tour operators to include in their package holidays. The Proms sell.

Whatever it is, it will be a good thing if some people find Lassus or Stile Antico worth perusing further though I’m not holding my breath.

[ed.] reading the John Willson prom thread, I wonder if this is targeted at the same sort of audience. It is a very attractive concert.

Um, just a thought, people who enjoyed the television series perhaps?

Maybe also those who aren't of the morally superior patronising persuasion?

Yes, Sherlock the Musical? As it's a Sunday afternoon I wonder if it will get a surprise celebrity appearance?

I am going to the Sherlock Holmes Prom and no I'm not a holidaymaker or even a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I've enjoyed many of the various tv episodes and some of the old films - haven't seen any of the new ones. I don't know all the music being performed and it doesn't bother me that it's not all 'classical' music. I'm going because I like the music of Patrick Gowers and I really like the Miklós Rózsa (The music from The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes or the theme at least is based on his Violin Concerto and this is probably the closest I'll get to hearing or seeing any of it performed live) plus I thought it would make an enjoyable evening out.
I get pretty fed up with all the negative comments about the non classical proms. I know the arguments about these events often being promoted more heavily than some of the other proms. Yes I know that Radio 3 and the BBC Proms should do more to encourage more people to experience the delights (and some of the horrors) of 'classical' music. Yes I thought that none of the singers in the Sinatra Prom had any gravitas (at least they didn't impersonate Sinatra) and judging by the reaction most there enjoyed it hugely but can some contributors to this forum stop disparaging non classical music performers/genres so quickly whilst at the same time getting all huffy with those who state they don't like the music of, for example, Xennakis or Gruber.
Finally I am a regular Proms attendee (have been for many years) and listen to/watch most of the ones I don't go to. I went to the Whitacre Prom yesterday [sun 9th] (not classical enough for some no doubt) and enjoyed it immensely so please can we stop all the us against them attitude and try and encourage not batter others into listening to all kinds of music and then individuals can make up their own minds.

                      Don't delude yourself matey
You are going (according to some in here) because you are inferior and have no judgement or taste

(Patrick was one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable musicians I have ever met and a great teacher.... It's great to see that his music is being played at the Proms )

Well I'll not be attending! Nor will I be listening via the radio.

I will be working, so will resort, as ever, to the iPlayer's Listen Again facility.

If you thought I referred to tourists in a derogatory sense, I apologise for not explaining it more clearly. People who go on package or semi packaged tours are often weathered holidaymakers and tour operators need to offer attractions that match their customers’ high expectations. This concert / show will be an excellent way of spending a Sunday afternoon in London.

I saw The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes when it was released (1970!?) and I like Miklos Rozsa’s music, but personally, or rather now I am old and set in my way, I don’t usually enjoy different kinds of music in one concert.

As for my original question about the target audience, you could say that it was my occupational disease and it was not my intentioned to discus whether the BBC Proms that claimed to be the world greatest classical music festival should include film music or other non-classical music.

I hope you’ll enjoy the concert and I look forward to reading your review here.
