Adding an orchestral backing/arrangements to rap/grime is a gimmick/pretence, I imagine the thinking is that it makes it more ‘respectable’ to a wider audience whilst fulfilling the ‘inclusivity’ label that the BBC is hanging on these late night Proms. Adding an orchestra certainly makes it more tuneful/melodic (but it doesn’t disguise the fact that this music comes from a world of bullying and casual violence, not to mention depressingly aggressive sexism.) In answer to Flay – the warning was of “the strongest possible language” before Krept & Konan, I think that was because the N-word was used rather than any four letter words, which were in frequent use.

Will it encourage the audience to seek out classical? Extremely unlikely although the purely orchestral parts didn’t get a negative reaction. There’s been a lot of Twitter activity about looking forwards to next year’s Rap Prom – having set a precedent what might transpire next season?

The problem is (as mentioned above) if you have Ibiza/Rap/Grime/HipHop played as it should be, without a full orchestra on stage, it isn't Proms as we know it anymore and it turns the Proms into just another music festival doesn't it?

For anyone interested, this Prom will shortly be discussed on the Channel 5 programme The Wright Stuff - always good for serious as well as a good laugh. Host Matthew Wright introduced it in advance just now with words to this effect: "Is the BBC Proms supposed to spend license payers' money featuring an Ibiza rave, music which is pretty much ubiquitous, or shouldn't it be supporting composers I like, such as Hans Werner Henze and Edgard Varese?".

This from somebody who claims Hawkwind among his intimate friends!

Tongue a bit in cheek there?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes, that's taken as read with this particular programme, (one of the reasons I lke it!) although Matthew W is in fact a Zappa fan, which might interest in a related way and explain the Varese connection. It wasn't much of a discussion - the three phoners claiming that the orchestral backings gave their children a welcome opportunity to hear a live orchestra at first hand, which they wouldn't be encouraged to get anywhere else - but at least it got an airing on prime time.

I wasn't disputing that - just the way he expressed it: 'why is is like that (ugh) rather than what I like'! To exaggerate the point …

No, I'm afraid I don't have a television. I was only reacting to what Serial had quoted. I thought 'Wright' was going to be a reference to Roger Wright

I see! Impressive! I must say, I was surprised to see this as a topic of discussion, but actually Matthew Wright has quite catholic tastes, so... better that naught!

He and a guest (pop star with a Classical music background whose name escapes me ) were rather against the idea of the five popular music Proms.
