Prom 37: Late Night With … BBC Radio 1Xtra (12.08.15)

    22:15
    Royal Albert Hall

Classical meets urban as rappers Wretch 32, Stormzy and Krept & Konan join the Metropole Orkest and Jules Buckley.

    Wretch 32 (rapper)
    Stormzy (rapper)
    Krept & Konan (rap duo)
    MistaJam (presenter)
    Sian Anderson (presenter)
    Metropole Orkest
    Jules Buckley (conductor)

Following 2013's Urban Classic Prom, BBC Radio 1Xtra joins the BBC Proms in a high-octane Late Night celebration of the thriving urban music scene, from hip hop to grime. Rappers Wretch 32, Stormzy and Krept & Konan join presenters MistaJam and Sian Anderson on stage, to set the Royal Albert Hall dancing in new remixes blending classical and urban styles, with a little help from Jules Buckley and his Metropole Orkest.

Well Clemmie B-H has just said "R3 listeners - I hope you'll agree that it's good to have our hearts and souls expanded. Whatever you think of the music"
I think Clemmie that I'm going to turn it off!!

This prom might have been a good idea, with John peel presenting,30 years ago.

            Right time slot too.

She's making a bit of an assumption that anyone's listening on Radio 3. Presumably it's on 1Xtra without he sugary commentary.

Perhaps next year R3 could run an idiot's guide on how to use google, or YouTube.

If only there were some way I could have my midriff contracted...

The emphasis, as one might have predicted, is very much on the shouty end of rap for which it is most known, and it isn't all like this. Remembering seeing the late Elton Dean's face turning red with scarily prominent veins when he played high energy jazz on his saxes, I wonder what the long-term effects of such a relentless style of performing will be on the body.

John Peel could wipe the floor with most BBC presenters you could name working today. An enthusiastic Prom-attender, too - he would have been brilliant at introducing different (why just "younger"?) audiences to the Musics of the Western Classical Traditions. On Radio 1.

I did not know that. It emphasises, perhaps, how things have changed. There are several presenters who proclaim a 'love' for classical music, among their other tastes: I wonder how many are enthusiastic Prom-attenders?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                            What a wonderful thought....if only.

He would refer to the Proms he'd attended in his Radio Times column and on Home Truths (with a fondness for Rachmaninoff, I remember). I think Cerys Matthews and Stuart Maconie are at least occasional visitors, too.
