to french frank. Thank you for your clarification. You have been a bit sneery - Whtacre Prom, you called it proms lite. Sherlock Prom, you called it mixing the light with the not so light - though you're not the only one.

So, you connect "light" with "sneery".

      Are you a "snob"?

Attaching the word 'lite' (not 'light') is generally taken to be sneery or contemptuous, suggesting that it's a poor imitation - as in calling New Labour 'Tory lite'. Nothing to do with 'light' as in 'light music'.

I know - but "the light Music with the not-so-light"?

            to ferneyhoughgeliebte.
Am I a snob? Sometimes. I prefer people to wear a bit more than a vest and shorts at the proms or theatre. I do wish that people would make an effort to stifle a cough especially during very quiet pieces of music or when a slow quieter movement is about to start and generally prefer no applause between movements.
I tend to associate light not with 'Light Music'/'Orchestral Music' terms not coined or defined by me but light as in not heavy and in the context of some of the Proms, light as in not worth attending/listening to/not as valuable a concert experience, as it is a word often used as a negative about music including this forum.
So yes sometimes I'm a snob but most of the time I'm broadminded especially about music in all in it's forms. I don't think the music one listens to or enjoys or dislikes should be defined by your age, background, culture, parental input, life experiences etc but realise these things all play a part. I feel I have extremely broad musical tastes and some things I have listened to at the Proms that grate on the ear. (Xennakis or Gruber's Percussion Concerto if examples are needed). They're opinions of mine that others may or may not agree with but when I express them I am mindful not to denegrate others possible enjoyment of them.
