The modern use of "chill" came to prominence with the rise of West Country Hip-Hop in the mid to late 80's. Cullompton's Most Wanted even had a rapper named "Thou Chill" though I preferred "Old 'Ansome"

TBF some of the best of this music is very skilfully put together I think.
Quite often it contains some wonderful sounds.
I don't dance to the stuff BTW
IMO it doesn't belong at the Proms when so much classical music remains unperformed.

ER, not only does your cred not suffer from this defense of the Ibiza phenomenon, but it contrasts very favourably with what looks very like knee-jerk response from other quarters. You show bravery in the face of almost certain condemnation; confidence, if not defiance, in your appreciation of the music; and diplomacy, if not acceptance, in deeming it non-Prom. I'm not at all familiar with the music myself, but it sounds as if it is very danceable to, so go ahead and do it. I know I would.

Padraig, to be also fair, people only have one main point: the fact that the Ibiza club night now celebrates 20 years on Radio 1 is not a reason for it having a special Prom devoted to it. Sibelius's 150th anniversary doesn't get him an evening at T in the Park. I can't see that anyone would want to offer an opinion about the music at all if it weren't seen as the BBC's determination to see popular music accepted everywhere (while classical music gets progressively squeezed out - see the televising of this year's Proms, and the BBC Music Day).

"Celebrating" something that has been around in pop music for 20 years doesn't seem very Rock n Roll to me

( for example, think about a celebration in 1972 of the pop music greats of the very early 50's,at the moment when Bowie and Roxy were bursting onto the scene....)

That R1 does not give air time to Sibelius is just whataboutery. Don't we expect our R3 to exhibit the virtue of inclusivity? Isn't that what education is supposed to be about?

I don't have any problem with bringing music to new audiences, and new audiences to music. An ever expanding Proms and the late night slots do allow for this.
My point is just, well, is there any real musical value in this particular concert in this context? Popular idioms have a tendency to need a reasonably strong element of " now" about them, especially in performance. For example The Stones' records from their glory days still sound fabulous, but are they really a great live experience these days? I doubt it.

It looks a lot too much like window dressing and posturing ....EDIT and branding... . And I wish it wasn't.

Um, this is questionable. What is the Ibiza audience being educated about? The BBC is providing these young fans with a weekend's clubbing entertainment in Ibiza every year, and presumably coverage on Radio 1. It seems wilful to argue that Radio 3 and the Proms should cover popular music, but the popular outlets don't cover classical music. Some doors must stand open, but others can be conveniently closed.

It seems wilful to argue that Radio 3 and the Proms should cover popular music, but the popular outlets don't cover classical music. Some doors must stand open, but others can be conveniently closed.

The Ibiza audience is being invited to be part of the greater music audience represented by the Proms. Their welcome to that body by R3 is a step in the direction of mutual understanding, and can enable further educative steps to take place. That R3 should be the instigator of such a welcoming gesture surely indicates its intentions for genuine inclusivity, and places the onus for reciprocal action on the popular stations. R3 and R4 already have an arrangement.
