It's on the analogy of 'national anthems' - songs, usually of a celebratory nature which are sung among specific groups e.g. football anthems, and which everyone knows. They proclaim 'togetherness', I suppose.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Like (as FF says) National Anthems, not all of which are songs

If you are suggesting they've simply hijacked the term, then I agree with you.

Actually I deleted the post you've quoted when I saw ff's, because that made sense in a way Mr GG's didn't.

I didn't know that the songs favoured by football supporters were calles 'anthems' as well. But I thought all National Anthems were songs.

                another thing "they" have stolen?

"Classical Music" doesn't solely refer to music of the "Classical Period"
and R'n'b isn't Rhythm and Blues

Here's a National Anthem without words

Here the National Anthem of Bosnia and Herzegovina .Aqui o Hino Nacional da Bosnia e Herzegovina .

Spain also has one without words

(though people probably make them up as in Wagner's famous "Kill the Wabbit" song )

Interesting that the first British usage recorded was back in 1935, when 'national anthem' and 'football anthem' were equated in a reference to 'Land of My Fathers'. Then it doesn't reappear until 1969 ('rock anthem') in the States. That led to it being regularly used in popular culture.

OED's draft entry (2003) is: "A popular song with rousing, emotive, qualities, often one identified with a particular subculture, social group, or cause. Chiefly with distinguishing word, denoting either the associated cause or subculture or simply the genre of music, as football anthem, rock anthem, etc. Sometimes mildly derogatory."

I know it from Rickie, Melvin and Charlie on Kiss FM - they're always on about 'Old Skool and Anthems' where 'old skool' mean 'old is cool'.

Arguably, you could say that the 'rot' set in with 'national anthem' - seldom antiphonal. Sorry for the diversion: once a pedant … :-)

Earlier than that, since the anthem that followeth in quires and places where they sing as a part of Choral Evensong isn't often antiphonal either (I hadn't spotted that connexion!)

A bit like acapella, which in its modern use is indeed unaccompanied, but not often appropriate for singing in church.

(Please note I wasn't complaining particularly, just interested in the explanation.)

In some circles 'thinking about' can be the same as complaining (critical = thass 'orrible).

Not forgetting the Americans predicting how their future society might look with their 'US anthem', and in 1973 Pink Floyd included the song 'us anthem' as the second track on side two.
