    Prom 5: Haydn/Gruber/Stravinsky (20.07.15)

    7.30 p.m.
    Royal Albert Hall

The BBC Philharmonic and John Storgards perform music by Haydn, Stravinsky and the world premiere of HK Gruber's percussion concerto "into the open ..." with soloist Colin Currie.

Haydn: Symphony No. 85 in B flat 'La Reine'
HK Gruber: into the open ... (world premiere)
    Stravinsky: Petrushka (1911)

    Colin Currie (percussion)
    BBC Philharmonic
    John Storgårds (conductor)

Petrushka, with its bustling Shrovetide fair and colourful carnival characters ends a programme which begins with Haydn's symphony 'La reine', the second movement of which shares Stravinsky's sophisticated approach to folk music. Viennese maverick HK Gruber's percussion concerto 'into the open ...', echoes the ballet's vivid scoring with a vast assortment of percussion instruments from Thailand, Africa and South America. Colin Currie joins the BBC Philharmonic and its Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds.

      Quite right too!

Does anybody remember a verse which I think originated in a Herbert Farjeon revue? It began-- "When Belinsky danced Belushka in September 1910"

      Unfortunately I've forgotten the rest!

This wil presumably be a short Prom, unless the Gruber turns out to be a substantial work.

Gruber's earlier percussion concerto (Rough Music, 1988) runs for just over 15 mins.

Wonderful vinteuil! I have never heard it sung before, but encountered it in a humour anthology, just the text. Great to renew an acquaintance!

It's been rather a good start to the Proms season.

Hearing Haydn 85 at the start of this Prom, my general reaction was "good", but I can't say that I was particularly blown away by the performance, or the music itself. If I have time, I'll give it another go, but it may be just me and Haydn symphonies, much as I'm happy to see them get live airing at the RAH. Interval time now, with HK Gruber and Christopher Cook at the RCM pre-Prom talk (edited), where HKG is now remembering David Drew.

                            Agreed.

However the section of Petrushka I heard was a bit of a shambles in terms of accident-prone solos. Made me remember the electrifying perfection of the Philharmonia in their Prom a few years back under Salonen. This sounded like amateur-hour in comparison
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I would have thought the Gruber might have been better placed in the first half.
