Slightly annoyed because we were in London yesterday for the afternoon with a free evening and could easily have taken in a Prom on the way home via South Ken. We would have considered almost anything but did not fancy this Ten Pieces thing at all. In the end we just came home and didn't even listen. We watched quite a good programme about Melvyn Bragg on TV.

Despite being 60 I don't yet consider myself an old fogey (I have a 13-yr-old daughter who tries to keep me up to date). But I really couldn't relate to the presentation of this concert at all. One big ego-trip, with the music entirely incidental(*). I simply couldn't conceive of any youngster being turned on to classical music by it.

That's not to say that I don't support the '10 Pieces' idea in principle, and strongly hope, even expect, that its less vapid presentations will have done some good.

(*) PS Did anyone else think that on R3 the audio level of the music compounded this impression? The presenter(s?) shouting at us, the even Mars seemed quite wimp-y. Didn't wait to check this out further - turned off after about 30 mins

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

        Perfectly expressed.

Worked very well in the hall as an entertainment and spectacle rather than a concert. My 4 kids were enthralled, and I guess that was the point. Wonderful to see youngsters being given a chance to share their work and what a thrill for them to 'perform' in the hall with the professionals. I can understand why it wouldn't 'work' just on radio!

I think the idea has a lot more to recommend it - particularly with the 'preparation' via the schools - than, say, Doctor Who. It may be that the most exciting part was the children's own performance but, as far as a Prom concert goes, that's a few cuts above the attraction being cheering the Daleks or Matt Smith.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

              Prom 2 - I made a mistake

I was late in on Saturday, had no time to read about the concert and switched on the radio just before 8pm. I was taken back to the late fifties when I spent Saturday mornings in the Odeon cinema enjoying being shouted at by a lovely chap on the stage before watching another second rate film. We did get to sing things like "Rule Britannia" and "Hearts of Oak" and all for 6d!
Thank you Aunty for taking me back to those early memories, such a pity I missed the Prom ...

The concert seems to have served its purpose

With so much of the discussion having moved to the Cobblers/Ibiza Prom, I wonder what long-term effect this Prom will have on young people.

Indeed. And I wonder how much publicity the media gave it, compared with the other one.
