The context is the playing of the symphony. But treat the Proms separately if you want to. Would you accept any clapping or cheering during the music (in the possibly unlikely event that you were at such a Prom in the first place).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I think those who get so het up about this on an annual basis are on a mission that will fail.
The context of the Proms is not the same as a sit down concert for initiates at The Wigmore Hall or late night Feldman at St Pauls in November
The idea that somehow "The Symphony" is some kind of holy relic that should ALWAYS be treated in the same way doesn't really hold up to either historical scrutiny or the context of folks feeling they want to applaud between sections (just like in Opera, Ballet, Indian Music, Jazz etc etc etc )

And less of the personal sniping, you have no idea what music i've been to hear or would go to.

Getting angry about this just makes the hypertension worse

But no answer to the question.

No one is clapping during the music

BUT it depends on WHAT the music is and WHERE it is happening

Make your rules if you like
          if it helps

              Indeed
Clapping between movements at the Proms is fine

Just as a matter of curiosity (as you so temptingly put), does this include symphony proms?

So Holst's Planets suite for large orchestra is outside of this discussion?

Yes on many occasions, and choral evensong, and mediaeval music, and satanic death metal, and Jazz, and so on and so on (though i'd probably give Elijah a miss these days)

                      No...I need to cough then

I thought that was part of the music?
You really can't tell these days you know with all the nonsense that these modern composers come up with

Thanks. I take it that you are saying ‘I didn’t mind in the least when people applauded in between the movements’, and not ‘it doesn’t matter if people applaud in between the movements’.

Do choral evensong, and mediaeval music, and satanic death metal, and Jazz have movements?

[ed.] I meant recently and not in your pre-student days.

I have never heard applause after a particularly fine Magnificat in its liturgical context, but the practice of applauding after Mass movements during concert performances is becoming standard. You could argue that there's supposed to be a chunk of plainsong in there, but really, audience participation is no substitute for that.

Audiences also applaud after every scrap of medieval song, even when the pieces are grouped and they're specifically asked to wait until the end of a group. It makes concerts about twice as long as they ought to be.

                              .
                              No

I'm saying what I wrote (and probably what I wrote last year and the year before)

Anyway it's time for the next person in the group to speak about their "personal journey" and how they became unable to cope with other human beings at concerts.
