But if you follow that line of argument, you are leaving it to individuals to decide, and, like the mindless clappers after the first two movements in Beethoven 6, and every movement in Walton 2, crassness will rule.

No it wasn't. It was feeble and died away quite quickly.

In other words, some did, some didn't - and those that did didn't get out-of-hand. On the TV it sounded quite appropriate to me.

But then again, a deathly hush after a cracking performance of Jupiter also sounds odd. And if you want it, maybe the radio/CD room at home is the best place, rather than a music festival...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not at all. An intense atmosphere has been created, which should not be broken by a handful of people doing their own thing. It should be broken by the hushed opening of Saturn.

I sensed that many wanted to but didn't feel brave enough. That included me, I didn't applaud, but I wanted to. Now I wish I had.

What an illogical question. Try walking across Oxford Street (other than at the lights). A bus or taxi might hit you, but it may stop in order to avoid killing you. It might just be better to follow a code of practice that works.

                          What a silly analogy.

It may or may not be, but I shall sit back and allow you free reign. I ask you to consider that you frequently adopt whichever argument is most likely to cause controversy. That does not mean you are necessarily wrong, but sometimes I question your motives.

I don't think we're supposed to criticise analogies here.

I haven't (I think) applauded between movements, but have sometimes felt like doing so.

An intense atmosphere has been created, which should not be broken by a handful of orchestra members doing their own thing, improvising all sorts of scrapings, puffs and dissonances in the hope that Saturn will sound reasonably in tune
