New Music at the Proms

One work that is definitely new, but which I did not spot on Hitch's list, is "Ophiocordyceps unilateralis s.l.", by Shiorsi Usui, which was broadcast on the matinee on Saturday 25 July. I was half listening to the composer's introduction, but not paying much attention, until I realised she was talking about fungi which attack and kill insects, entomopathogenic fungi, to give them their technical name. The one in the title attacks ants. I never worked directly on this group, but I did work on other aspects of entomopthogenic fungi and once I started listening, the lady seemed well informed. I cant say that the music made much impression on me, and I very much doubt I shall hear it again, but this must be a first: if anyone else can name another piece of music inspired by an entomopathogenic fungus, I'd like to hear about it.
Incidentally, the title is the generic and specific name of a particular fungus, but I dont know what s.l. stands for; I have written to an expert colleague to find out.
If people want to search out more information, it was known as Cordyceps unilateralis in older literature.

How embarrassing ... I once knew that, but in those days it was never abbreviated. "Sensu lato" just means "in a loose sense", ie it looks closer to that species than anything else; we arent strictly confident that is what it is, but we havent got any better ideas. It usually happens when taxonomists gather together a lot of similar material and say well, it all looks like abc xyz s.l., but we are fairly sure, with more material and a lot more work, we can split them up into several different species.

I think Ill get over itNumquam Satis!
