The one Brian work above all which I would love to hear at the Proms is no.4 - Das Siegeslied: setting of Psalm 68 in German, for forces on the same scale as the Gothic (although no brass bands). For many years, I've had the view that it's Brian's best work (the fruition of the experiments in nos. 1, 2 and 3.) The last live performance of it was at the Ally Pally in 1974 (one of my most unforgettable experiences. Was anyone else there?) The sheer volume of it in places would take the lid off the Albert Hall.
(I should say that I've a big axe to grind here - I've been computer-typesetting it, on and off, for more years than I care to remember (in Sibelius, it's 68 staves!!!))
The other Brian work which would go very well at the Proms is no.10 - only 20 minutes long, but immensely powerful and intense (and includes wind and thunder machines, which of course the Prommers would love - Beecham's comment about British audiences not liking music, but loving the noise it makes.)) It's even got a ravishing tune for the solo violin.Last edited by peterthekeys; 05-09-15, 22:47.
