    That's a very firm response.
You really know why it's not possible then?

I agree completely with Petrushka (well, with a name like mine I'm likely to, aren't I?).

But of course as far as the BBC is concerned we all revolve around the metropolis and can just saunter over to the RAH after a jolly day in the office, can't we?

All I'll say about the concerts is that personally I'm not upset at missing the ones on Sunday 9 August when I shall be listening to all the Shostakovich quartets at The Globe. Of course I could always have listened again for 30 days if I had been.

I'd need to be tempted with more than a cup of tea and some triangulated sandwiches!

By the time I know which concerts I want to attend I'm always last in the queue for picking up available slots and often have to plead with the boss for a particular day off. Needless to say, colleagues are completely self-centred about getting their preferred dates in early.

Is it really not possible to have the Guide published earlier?
I really feel for you Petrushka. I've been lucky enough in my career to have pretty much complete control over my annual leave, and living in London I've rarely needed to do more than make sure I leave by 5.30 on a prom night. It never really occurred to me what someone in your position has to contend with. I've taken it for granted. It's a shame your boss and colleagues couldn't be a bit more accommodating.

I'm out of touch on the Proms rumours.

I was thinking that RVW's SS could be the opener. But do you mean menne, menne tekel upharsin? That kinda writing on the wall?

              Woo!

              I'm 'avin' some of that!

I attended a great amateur performance of that by the (Waltham) Forest Symphony Orchestra, The Hackney Singers and a professional bass and conductor at St Johns Church in Hackney in the 1990s, but haven't seen it since. A great opener, IMV

And the second appearance that night? (Actually comes first, though not first item in concert!)

                  Einsturzende Neabauten?

                  Perhaps not.

I'm rubbish at this. Writing on the wall? Hmmm, let me think.

Gorecki? The little girl's writing in her cell at Auschwitze?

That's a good answer, but would have made a long concert.
Think piece title and composer to whom you awarded the starry wand!

Can't be Kullervo, that's longer than Gorecki 3.

Am I the only one in the forum that isn't aware of the first night programme!!!!

Hmmm ... there was a starry wand connected with Nono, whose Il Canto Sospeso is based on Graffiti - but you said no Nono?

My starry wand was for Sibelius
